I dunno, I think it's something like being able to tie your shoes...although that could be Force Recon...

Dumbass! Have you never heard of OPSEC?
:P
But really, go to www.marines.com and talk to a recruiter or something.

i heard my senior drill instructor scolding one of our recruits about pullups because he got only 3 pullups on the final pft and he said starting october you need to be able to do 5 (used to be 3) pullups now, and the rest is 50 crunches, and 28 min 3 mile.

WOW.
Aim for the max in everything, and do a lot of push ups too... and flutter kicks, and mountain climbers.
USMarineDEP, you need to change your name... ;)

Yeah, in 9 months I can always take it up and make sure it's cared for. ;)

not to be a nit picker or whatever....
wasn't it 100 sit ups in 2 mins, at least that's what it was 4 years ago.
not really that much of a change though, that was usually the gimme in the PFT test.

When I was first in it was 80 sit ups in 2 minutes, but in '96 or so it went to 100 crunches in 2 minutes. Now? I have no idea, except that I could do neither of those things. :P
Did you have to learn to disassemble/assemble and m16 blindfolded?

Well, let me rephrase. 18 minutes or under is considered to be the maximum score you can achieve on the run.

Edit: I meant exceed the minimum, of course.

Even if you do more than the maximum number, you only receive the number you get for the max. I believe you get a certain number of points for each exercise depending on your time/reps on it.

I don't think we did that in boot camp (I finished boot camp in January of '94, and I can't remember)... In the FMF though, we took an M16, a SAW, and an M60 apart, put all the pieces in a box, shook it up, and then had to sort them and reassemble them blindfolded.
It sounds hard, but it wasn't really. It was just some motivational training, not a requirement for anything. A Marine likes a challenge!
screw the minimums. You will expected to do your best. Your recruiters ought to be able to put you on a plan to get you ready; lot of recruiters put together pools to PT together-maybe yours can hook you up with a partner.

300 point system
pull-up worth 5pts(ea)
Crunches - 1pt(ea)
Run - after 18mins every 10 seconds is 1 pt subtracted from 100
225 is first class score

PFT Max for Crunches is 100, not 80, and I think the minimum is 55 now, but I wouldn't know, I've never gotten less than 120, heh.

For Marine OCS you must have at least a 225 PFT to even get accepted, though the rule of thumb is that they never accept you without anything less then a 250 PFT. I know Col. Smith, the previous OCS CO did not want anyone at OCS with less then a 250 PFT. They recommend you show up running at least the 3 miles in 22-23 mins, about 100 crunches in the 2 mins, and about 15 pull ups.
Last PFT I ran was like 20:00 min 3 mile, 100 crunches, and 20 pull ups. Comes out to about 288 score. Push ups help with pull ups. Also look for something called the ARMSTRONG PULL UP program to help with your pull ups. Crunches, well just do them. When you wake up and go to bed do a 100 of them, take more then 2mins if you have to, just get your body used to constantly doing 100 crunches, eventually you will do the 100 in well under 2mins NO problem. To help with your run time I have this track program where I do laps at only 80% strength. I run a lap, then walk a quarter lap, then run a lap, and walk another quarter lap, etc. You end up running 10 laps. You do that every other day. Then on the 2nd week you run 2 laps, and walk half a lap. You end up running the 2 laps 5 times. Also, time your first lap, and whatever your time is, you want to continue to either match it or beat it. Your final lap you want to go balls to the wall. This program has really helped me cut down my run time.

Because pull-ups are a far better indicator of actual upper body strength?

225 or above is 1st class PFT. 285 or higher you get a letter of commendation from the CO. You wanna get into Recon you better have a 285 or better and a 1st class swim qual in Boot (a very strong first class I might add). I aced every single PFT in the 8 years I was in with 300 pts. Best run time was 16:45!

It always amused me that people joined the Marine Corps without knowing how to swim. Seems the whole water thing is right in the name. ;)
I was a first class, but then again I've been swimming since I was five. On the other had I knew guys who had to qual every year because they swam like rocks.

Air Force PT requirements:
Spin 100 times in a swivel chair, walk to coffee machine without falling over. Pour a perfect cup of coffe and make it back to your chair without spilling a drop. ;)

Thank god they arent, they are ****ing hard for people that are 6'3 and have super long arms. I've still been working on them, but I hate those damn things.

Pullups aren't much easier for those of us with long arms either. Just a curse you have to live with.
It's okay though, I wouldn't want to be short. ;)

We were still issued the green jungle boots in 92.(In boot camp) You could tell all the Swim-unqs, because their boots turned orange from all the chlorine and repeat visits to the pool. Dunno why, always got a kick out of that!
Also, yes, three pull-ups is the bare minimum, if your only doing three, youre getting a **** PFT score, and an ass beating.
Mountain climbers sucked, I also hated "Sun Gods", after doing about 500 of them.

Keep in mind that even if you do the bare minimum (3 pull ups, 50 crunches and a 28 minute run time) you will still fail the PFT based on points alone.
