Does anyone know if the Abakan AN94 is in service and with what units?

Originally it was intended to replace most, if not all, AK-74 rifles in the Russian service, but it soon turned out that the complete replacement is impossible due to the economical (mostly) and some other reasons. At the present time the AN-94 is considered as the "professionals' choice", and is used in limited numbers by the elite forces of the Russian Army, police and Internal Affairs Ministry. The main body of the Russian armed forces are still armed with the Kalashnikov assault rifles, and AK-type rifles will remain in service for a long time, most probably.

Don't know if that's the final word, but it makes sense to me.

Yet I haven't seen a single picture of it in service. :(

I believe the AEK is lined up to be the next widespread replacement.

I know this question if off topic but since you posted these pictures, I would like to know what these Russian soldiersa are wearing as their helmet? Is it Kevlar or a new material? It looks like a racing helmet to me.
Regards :D

only SF units.
I've seen it at Defendory International in Greece, and seems a very complicated rifle.

There seem to be durabilty problems of the systems working parts - I talked to a russian operator about this during last year's MILIPOL after handling a Abakan there...
