I think so, there are no plans of introducing the minimi as far as i know.

I think that one is actual combat at mount Igman near Sarajevo during Deliberate Force

Yes, I was wondering the same thing; the Dutch fired at the same time as the British 105 mm Light Guns of the 19 Regiment RA and French 155 mm AUF1 SP guns of the 40°RA and 120 mm RTF1 mortars of the FFL "section de mortiers lourds" of the 2°REI.

I know the French fired at least 650 155mm rounds on Igman; the first "fire for effect" was on a sniper who was shooting at a French artillery forward observer...he never fired again !

The Dutch still have bases in the Caribeans (Curaçao for example); it's only normal they train in the available climates, in case of a UN mission or a NEO in a Jungle area.

Plus they have commitments with the Brit RM Cdo and I suppose they need to be able to go where the bootnecks go.

The Mariniers often train with the French forces of the Caribeans and of French Guyana.

we are still in charge of an island group called the Netherlands Antilles which looks a little bit like

http://www.cbk.rotterdam.nl/gastateliers/antillen1999/pix/junb.jpg
well it looks exactly like that because the picture was taken there ;)

possible (yet relatively unlikely) scenario

There are already several MiGs in Venezuela, according to Colombian defense officials who have shown UPI photographs of the planes being prepared for flight testing at the Libertador air base in Maracaibo. A U.S. intelligence source also claims that MiGs have been spotted flying near the Caribbean island of Curcao.

curacau is part of the Netherlands Antilles

The Dutch Marines can't choose there own cloths, but simply buying stuff whats good right from the rack. The British DPM Gore-Tex are good jackets, and the US woodland camo seemst to workt the best in all thoose differnen erea's the marines visit. Note, thoose cloths where issued after the Dutch Army issued their own Jungle, DPM and dessert camo. I don't know why yhey didn't issued the same cloths. maybe just because it's Army  !

The LMG version of the C7 (C7A1 LOAW) is a piece of... Just like the Diemaco it self. That's why the Marines will issue the G36 in 2007 (only 12 years after issueing the C7 rifles...). I don''t know why the Marines don't use the Minimi. Maybe because the put all their trust in the good old MAG ;) Good post BTW!

I think it's an image issue. The marines carry the bulky MAG with the powerful 7,62 round, while the army (wimps :P) use the pussy minimi para. :P

Hahaha, I spoke to a friend about the MAG vs. Minimi in the Army. He didn't like the Minimi (seems to break easily), and they took the MAG to Yugo and every exersice they did since the Minimi was issued to them in 2000 :D .

Exactly. Although I think the minimi looks really good, it's still somewhat of a toy next to a FN MAG.

Belgium has less soldiers, that means more machineguns per soldier. And it get's them for free because FN is a belgian company.

Lol yah, But are you sure we will have less soldiers with the planned cost reduction of the NL army? Just a question! Don't mean anything by it.

What IS up with the uniforms... The Royal dutch marines (Or whatever) are currently here in Harstad on exercise... They run around in mixtures of DPM and woodland... It dosen't look good...

I think a unit should at least stick to one design when the unit is in the same environment...

OR that they at least have one kind of uniform for when they leave the base.

No only some urban jungle ;-)
FYI The Netherlands also has Indonesia as a former colony and Suriname.
But jungle training now is just for fun and spending the budget if I may say so p-)

The Dutch Operational Unit Marines are now in Harstad having a Mountain Movement and Survival Course. First week should be theory.
Then they will do some river crossing and some mountain skills and at the end they will do 3.. 1 day marches.
I think they wear different uniforms because they are from different groups with different tasks.
There is about Dutch 600 troops in Harstad now right?

mix of DPM and Woodland;

The normal BDU is in M82 Woodland.
The gore-tex clothing is in DPM
The gore-tex parka is also in DPM
Web gear is in DPM.

The Dutch Marines are also allowed to purchase their own gear. So it's very normal to see a Marine with a woodland Parka. But on training, most Marines won't use their own (expensive) gear and use the gear supplied to them by the goverment.

The US uses the same weapons;

The SAW as a Squad weapon, the M240 (MAG) as a platoon weapon.

Sure the MAG is heavy, but the firepower it delivers make it more than worth it. It's havey caliber (compared to the M249) and high accuracy make it a very good weapon.

For platton-level patrols and assaults it would be my weapon of choise for a supportweapon at all times. But we really need some ammo-bags to enable the gunner to deploy his weapon quicker (righ now that takes way too much time)

Well, we do use a "storm-magazine"; a steel round box, that carries 50 rounds.

Our Marines don't use the Minimi, because it's to experimental. They tested it, and the barrel was far to hot after one 200 Mag. And it wasn't reliable enough. So they're still useing the old MAG, and for as a Light Support Weapon, the C7 LSW.

A Marine who told me this, said something like this: "The Army (which uses the Minimi) doesn't operate in the most dirty ****holes in the world, and we do. And the Minimi doesn't operate in these conditions."
