Some of you may have seen this, goto home.hccnet.nl/22.sas/ go to commendation in the menu on the left. Its a letter of commendation General Schwarzkopf gave to the SAS after Gulf 1. I like the line about how SAS was the only force deemed qualified for this critical mission. What, no SEALs/Delta?!!Ha Ha ;)

he was just trying to make them feel special.

The Special Air Service is an absolutely wonderful outfit. Top notch. However, remember that:

1. General Schwarzkopf made no secret of his dislike for special operations and;

2. Many special operations teams were compromised during Desert Storm; only one, though, was completely unprepared for the climate, refused to take proper transportation, had a number of operators captured, suffered a fatality and was so poorly led that the patrol was split up.

All SOF teams have "things go wrong." It happened in Iran. It happened in Somalia. But to claim that the SAS is better than EVERYONE is a massive insult to the countless men that sacrifice daily.

The only force deemed qualified huh? Too bad Delta sent several teams in with the exact same missions. SF also sent several teams in on SR missions, and when two SF teams were comprimised, did everything turn to **** like it did for the SAS? No, they held their composure, called for exfil., (they made sure they had the right frequencies before they infil.'d, LOL), and stuck it out. One of the teams did so while fighting a heroing battle against Iraqi soldiers and native tribesman who were trying to flank them. Also: None of these guys thought that they were such hot **** that they ought to write a book.

I know exactly what you're saying; the SAS are not necessarily any better than CAG or the Groups or DEVGRU and the Teams for that matter. But the SAS weren't exactly too shabby either (in most cases ;) )

"I am completely convinced that had the US forces not received these thorough indoctrinations by SAS personnel, US forces would have suffered a much higher rate of casualties than was ultimately the case," as the Bear says!

SAS, if they were the best in the world, and if the US SF sucked, then technically you would have to be in the SAS to diss them but personally Im convinced you couldnt compete with an Air Force computer technician. Keep jerkin off to your ****o good buddy, develop those forearms!

Hoosha daddy!!!!!! What were we talking about? Oh yeah, The SAS are very good, but so is Delta, SF, SEALs, Force Recon. Well maybe not SEALs. Just kidding guys!!!
I'm sick of all the Brits always saying SAS this, SAS that. If your press was as free as ours I'm sure you would have heard of some SAS screw ups. No SOF unit doesn't have skeletons in their closet, I don't care what unit it is. Also remember, you Brits didn't invent this stuff. Who did? Well as far as Anglo-Saxon folks are concerned, we did. That's right kids, before we were the U.S. we were using guarilla tactics fighting in the French and Indian war, 1754-1763. Who taught us? The Native Americans. You Brits thought it most unsportsman like.

Now I have to go develop MY forearms.

1754.......late developers then, cause us"Jocks" were using guerrila warfare against the English Army of "Edward Longshanks" in the 1300's
200 yrs b4 your discovery!! also the jacobite Army also used un conventional warfare against the "Redcoats"in the 1740's.Go and get these forearms fixed!!!

Argyll - I try to keep discussions about military subjects in two seperate groups: pre-firearms and post-firearms.
jacobite Army? What's that? I'm always interested in learning something.
My point was that modern military, small unit, guerilla tactics started being formed at the time I mentioned. We might be able to research back to the first caveman who hid behind a boulder and knocked another one on the head when he walked by, but that has no bearing on this discussion. Neither does the point about 12th century warfare, no matter what kind it was.

Jack,
300yrs ago isn't modern!!its History!!It was you who brought up Dates about How you,the USA were supposed,in your eyes,to be the founders of Guerrila tactics, the point about the 1300's was about the same tactics you are talking about, and yes you can go back in time, you can't cause your country wasn't discovered then, that was my point!!.
The Jacobite Army was made up of Scottish clansmen who rebelled aginst the Government(the English)because of the "clearances"being carrried out on their Scottish homes. And yes they were armed with flintlock weapons!
Your statement contained words ,about being sick of the Brits, and their SAS,well Jack Your Top Notch, and I mean that, btw ,Delta Force was founded by Charlie Beckwith, who had spent some time with the SAS,and was so impressed with what he had seen and learned ,that He got the backing to form a small unit ....and hence the Op detachment Delta was formed!
Every unit has screw ups,but but the principle of Spec ops is to be covert, and that's the way it should be!!You should refrain from slagging other Spec Ops off, unless you have 1st hand experience!!!!They ALL do a great job, regardless of their nationalities......one last Question for you?
Do you have Military experience?

Apogee

Didn't COL Beckwith say "What the British invented, we perfected." Yeah, its like that. But whats the point in fighting, we're all shooting the same direction, except the French, who always seem to be wazing white flags. Both units do some pretty amazing things.

I remember having some national guardsman over training with us were suprised that our Unit did CQB practice with Live ammo.
They said that was special forces only style training in the states.
though after having a few rounds drop near my ankles I could see there point:)
