Is donating to soldier causes philanthropy?
Maybe someone should donate you a language course? p-)
Sure, as long as the money goes to bettering the lives of the men and women serving, and not into the purchase of arms or war materiel.
Donating money that goes directly into weapons can't really be philanthropy. Well, the weapons might disagree. :)

phi·lan·thro·py
n. pl. phi·lan·thro·pies
1. The effort or inclination to increase the well-being of humankind, as by charitable aid or donations.
2. Love of humankind in general.
3. Something, such as an activity or institution, intended to promote human welfare.
BUT according to Wikipedia:
Philanthropy involves the donation or granting of money to various worthy charitable causes. It is seen as a way to directly effect change in society without recourse to the bureaucratic mechanisms of government. Someone who practices philanthropy is known as a philanthropist. Philanthropy is a major source of income for artistic, musical, religious, humanitarian causes.
By the conventional definition of philanthropy, only a wealthy person can be a philanthropist. Many non-wealthy individuals have dedicated – thus, donated – their lives to charitable causes but have never been described as philanthropist (http://www.philanthropist.org)

Well, I will never be a philanthropist. Nor do I aspire to become one. But I listened today to an author who wrote a book about philanthropy. And I thought to myself: What a wonderful . . . Uhm, no. I thought to myself: See the name of the thread.

And you can prove that? Not that I insist that's the best possible way to express the question. But there's nothing wrong with that grammar.
