These are the exact words that were spoken that day. They do not reveal a man , as according to the CIA report, of incredible bravery and one that killed "many" terrorists while trying to defend Mike Spann. He supposedly fired all his bullets and even had to use hand-to-hand combat to break away. I'm not knocking you CIA fans out there, this is what REALLY went on that November day.
DAVID, CIA AGENT (Spann's partner running away from his partner into a room of media personal): We control the north end of the fort. The south end of the fort is in their hands. There's hundreds of dead here at least and I'm not -- I don't know how many Americans are dead. I think one was killed. I'm not sure. I'm not sure. There were two at least need some other guys, just need help to free this place up. We need to have - and again, we can't hit it from the air. We're not talking coming...
Captured on video, Dave had sprinted toward a building, shown holding the pistol by the barrel, instead of the grip. How are you going to return fire if someone jumped out at you? He was confused out of his mind, as you can see by the quote. He repeatedly fumbled to put his 9mm back in the belt, forgetting to put the safety on although the hammer was back. He did not know what happened. He quickly used one of the CNN journalist's satellite phone to call the embassy where his situation-report was unclear. He did not know what happened - and he certainly didn't know what happened to his partner.
In time, elements of 5th Group, Delta Force, British SAS, and later troops of the 10th Mountain began showing up.
On November 27th, after a night of pounding from an AC-130, Major Mark Mitchell, of 5th Special Forces Group, along with 5 other US/UK operators entered into the prison which was still in AQ hands. They had to conduct CQB through the mud-caked hallways, but they finally found Mike Spann's body. It was ****y-trapped but the British and American commandos disarmed it.
Spann's body would bear the worst of rumors - he had been captured alive and tortured. Both of his legs were broken below the knee, typical AQ torture. He was alive for quite some time afterwards, two bullets were placed in the small of his back on either side of his spine. And a final bullet was found in the back of his neck, probably as he knelt with his hands tied around his back.
You want to know why these reports were not immediately published? Because the government did not want another Somalia incident.
