Out of young, unmarried, healthy, sound-minded and able-bodied Korean adults, only the craziest ones join the UDT/SEALs...

I personally wouldn't serve there, since you have to rot in the barracks for another extra 2 1/2 years, going through all kinds of special training.(Although there are some social benefits for retirees after discharge)

The UDT/SEAL is divided into 4 branches, the Underwater Demolition Team, SEALs, CT units, and the Explosive Ordnance Demolition. Sometimes these 4 branches cooperate with each other to accomplish their missions, and sometimes cooperate with ROK Marines, or ROK Army Special Forces.("Teukjeonsa" in Korean, known for their black berets)

According to widespread rumors, UDT/SEALs frequently operate on North Korean waters and coasts. Also, it is to my knowledege that a SEAL team was deployed to the Persian Gulf during the Gulf War(the first one), to fake a massive amphibious invasion. They had succeeded in that effort, and made an Iraqi division marching towards the coalition troops turn around.

The photos are from the ROK Navy website.

US Navy SEALs did perform a diversion operation along the Kuwaiti coastline in 1991, on the eve of the ground assault. They planted explosive charges along beaches which would have been logical choices for an amphibious assault, an exercise the USMC had ostensibly rehearsed as part of an intoxication campaign.

Douglas Waller presented the operation in his book "The Commandos".

Discovery channel also presented a short documentary on the operation, which details have only been partly de-classified. The documentary featured an interview with the officer leading the operation on the ground, (then) Lt. Tom Dietz, now a Lt.-Cmdr.

I know that the UDT/SEAL Special Missions Unit (CT team) along with the SSU have been the one boarding all the North Korean mini-subs that been washed up in the south.

If you want some really good photos and info on them, check out the Concord Publications website (www.concord-publications.com). They have a photo article on them in an issue of Special Ops that came out last year.

I heard that these lads train regularly with US Navy SEALs, and that their traininig is pretty similar to that of US SEALs. Is that true?
