You might want to reconsider that
In the summer; there's about 50000 billion mosquitos buzzzing around.
In the winter, no mosquitos, but max temp is ca. -20˚C and can go down to -50˚C.
Just sayin' :P

What's that on his face? In harsh winter conditions you don't put anything on your face like that. Yes, its true that if the weather is seriously freezing (under -20 C or so) its dangerous to put anykind of camouflage or lotion on your face due to the fact that your skin will freeze. However if there is something like -5 to -10 I would not worry. Finnish army is very carefull with this.

Depends. I could be not just a paint, but grease-based camo, that in fact helps. I used face ointment (not camo, civilian one) at my time on North, for wind protection.

Its best if you put vaseline all over ya self ... keeps body warmth in p-) I believe that the best way to protect your face in winter is to use some kind of "commando mask". Protecting your face with clothing is much better than any other way.
-Jack-

A combination of both would work wonders.
and i just found out that David Blaine wore vaseline thje whole time he did that ice cube stunt (stood in-side a huge ice cube for 48 hours i think)
so if it works for that then i'm sure its useful for winter ops

Hmmm...I spent lots of nights in forest in winter during my service. I remember one exercise when there was not enough snow to make a cave or an igloo. So we made a simple shelter like this...
http://www.lshp.fi/joiku/lehti_2_2003/kuvat/puisto/Laavu.jpg
...much lower though... We had no fire and we slept in our sleeping bags. I wasn't shivering when I started to sleep and I catched 2-3 ours of "good" sleep. During the night temperature had fallen to -22 degrees in celsius and I woke up shivering. Well, that wasn't the hardest part. The hardest part was to get out from the sleeping bag and start putting you clothes back on! It felt so cold! And I couldn't get my boots on because the moisture from my feet had frozen inside the boots. I had to bash them against a tree to get them back on!
It was great!!! woot

A little trick - you put your clothes (everyting except boots and parka) _inside_ sleeping back, socks and pants down to your feet, sweater etc as a pillow. Working like a charm (know from experience) :)
Speaking of shelter - instead of tents for shelters you can use double sleeping bag (not a double, in fact, but specially made, same size as a single on down end, and twice bigger then normal in upper end). And some plastic bag, if sleeping bag is not water resistent.
Then you put your sleeping bag in plastic, lay it down and use tree branches or something to make a triangle. Insert it in sleeping bag - you got your tent. Fire up hard fuel tablet or candle - you got nice warm shelter for one.
great pics! love the cold!
I'm glad I'm gonna do my service in the summer

Waterfree Vaseline I presume?
If you try that trick with ordinary Vaseline (here in Norway the sort of stuff that come in small yellow round metal boxes with a green clover on) you'll actually promote frostbite instead.
Otherwise keeping cold out by smearing body with fats of some sort or another is an old trick with long distance swimmers.
I've never tried that vaseline trick myself though, but anyway have managed fine without even at temperatures around -30 C.
Winter was a fine excuse anyway in my Norwegian army days for not shawing in the morning p-) (so as to protect the fat layer on the face skin).
The idea of taking off layers of clothing, rather than putting on jumper and all, as a measure of preventing hypotermia is a concept that initialy often takes some convincing with foreign troops doing winter training here.

When it comes to army you have to use the equipment issued to you and your team. When it comes to tents and so on we often did not have that luxury. One of the interesting parts of serving in a sissikomppania (=guerrilla warfare/recon company). I do know all the tricks to make shelters for one or more using our gear and equipment. But thanks for good tips! :) I think I'll drag my ass to the forest this winter and try it out again - voluntarely!

You always put your boots inside the sleeping bag. Otherwise it turns up as a solid pice of ice. And if the boot is cold your feet will be cold.
And after a couple of days you colud end up with a severe frostbite.
Learned that in my service as a ranger in the swedish army.
@Caraway: do you speak swedish?
If you do i can recomend this book: Vintersoldat (Wintersoldier) wich can be found on this page

You better pray you don't sweat easily ;)
All your clothes and a sleeping bag is usually a no-no...
If i was in a sleeping bag in that kinda weather i'd wear everything an i mean EVERYTHING
No. If bag is good (and I'm sure finns have good bags, with kind of climate in their country), you don't need a lot of clothes - and then it easy to start sweathing, and you will have a nice time at morning, when all you sweat will start to freeze. This is common mistake people makes, because it's not pretty to get to the bag when it's cold.
About boots in bag. I never put them in, for me warm wool socks is enough for not to warry about cold boots, but I can see why people can do it, if it's clean and dry.

Those jackboots used by the soldiers in the picture, are they made of rubber, and do Finnish soldiers use foothcloths similar to Russian soldiers?
Are footcloths better than socks, with regards to absorbing footsweath (can you wear footcloths longer than socks before their heath retaining properties diminish through sweathstaining)?

Yes, they are made of rubber. There are two types, for Winter (http://www.mil.fi/laitokset/talv/footwear2_en.dsp) and Summer (http://www.mil.fi/laitokset/talv/footwear1_en.dsp). In addition the combat boots are sometimes worn at dry conditions and always at barracks.
Nowadays Finnish soldiers use socks. Both issued and of their own preference. ;)

When i was a young and slim ranger in the 20th century i got issued both footchloth and socks.
I preferred sock because it involved folding with the footcloth and if you didn´t get right your feet got sore.
Nowadays the footcloth is no longer issued.
And when you put your boots in your sleeping bag make sure your boots is snowfree. ;)

This pic remembers me of my early military service, when we had an old primus stove that didn't brun properly (with the old type of burner head containing several more loose pieces than the newer model).
Then it was time for one of my mates to refuel the thing, and for some reason he hadn't taken care to ensue that the red spirit and the kerosene bottles was of different size or shape. In fact the two bottles were so similar I don't blame him mixing the two, pouring red spirits into the kerosene tank :cantbeli: rofl rofl. Pumping up the pressure and heating up the burner head with some more red spirit (or was it kerosene :cantbeli: rofl?? Don't remember exactly ). Leading to a massive WROOooM and a huge fireball, that would most surely have set our 5 sheeter tent alight if my mate hadn't saved his dignity by boothing the thing out the opening with a flying kick rofl rofl rofl rofl.
Afterwards that poor primus stove burned more efficiently than any such stove I've used before that or since .
Damn!
I hate winter! Having been around 90 days in the woods as a conscript (prollly 60 between november and April = snow, sleet, humidity, frustration)
and 26 as a reservist (all of them in winter) I can truly say these pictures really hit a nerve.
Lance Corporal, Lumimyrsky 2003 was just fine, eh? There I was at the armoured brigade's HQ when we got run over completely. What a fiasco on our side.

Well, it was a bit frustrating. I had expectations of constant fire fights and Armors rolling all over the place.. ;)
..ofcourse it was all bull**** and in the end I didn't even fire my assault rifle. :|

The guns ?
I'm presuming you mean the assault rifles. Well , you got the 7,62mm RK62's there but I can't be bothered to browse around to see if they've got the (it's a light machinegun) KVKK62's over there as well...

Infact , you get to browse the whole RK - family!

About the blanks the Finnish army is using;
The Finnish army uses also blanks with wooden bullets, right? Is that 100% save in use? I mean, there must be pieces of wood leaving the barrel when the weapon is fired.
Great pics! Thanks!

Yes, blanks are with wooden tips.
When they are fired, the blank firing attachment in the end of the barrel brakes the wooden bullets in to tiny splinters, which then eject sideways from the BFA.
If you happen to have you face very close, say 1-3m, to the barrel, then yeah, you get a load of splinters to your face...(I have experience of this :P)
But I wouldn't say it's dangerous.

I thought that it was a'BFA for 'normal' blanks, because Sweden (which also use wooden bullets) has a bulky system on the end of the barrel.
Holland did used blanks with wooden bullets (.303 Lee Enfield and Bren) till 1958/ 1959 when some guy made put the bullets in oil till they where soaked, and fired them in the Bren :cantbeli: ! Ofcourse, someone did get hurt, and the blanks with a crimped case or plastic body was issued. Since the Diemaco is issued, even the 'flash' is most of the time covered ynder the BFA :| .
Thanks for your answer!

If you mean those black spots in picture, it's just dirt flying after mortar rounds hit to the ground.
