FALLUJAH, IRAQ - Three members of the same family were killed and three others injured Tuesday during a combined air and ground strike launched by U.S. forces in the town of Fallujah, Iraqi police say.
Residents and Iraqi police claim the family members were killed when U.S. helicopter gunships fired six missiles into a farmhouse and its courtyard.
Two children were also reported wounded.
U.S. military officials said ground troops called in air support after guerrillas attacked American soldiers and ran into the buildings.
The military said one person was killed in the operation involving the 82nd Airborne Division.
The fighting took place in a village close to Fallujah, an area known for its strong support for deposed leader Saddam Hussein.
Witnesses said five big craters from rocket attacks could be seen in courtyards of homes involved.
A sixth missile reportedly crashed through the roof of one of the rooms in the house.
On Monday, a bomber blew himself up at a police checkpoint outside UN headquarters in Baghdad, killing an Iraqi policeman and wounding 19 others.
About 11 other people, mostly policemen, were injured in the blast, the second such attack in two months to target the UN in Baghdad.
