Look at the third picture down, what is that guy in the foreground holding? Is that some kind of radio/comms euipment? If it is it looks ancient.

These pics make for depressing viewing, i read somewhere that sometimes these guys don't get paid for months due to Moscow's cashflow problems and general inefficiency. Imagine being a conscript out there...!

I think this is intercom, for tank crews::::Edited:::::I'm sure now, the guy on turret in 4th pic have the same device.

In the second lot of photos the third one down is a nice pic of the Vasilek automatic mortar... 82mm cal fed from a 4 round clip.

Very Nice pics... thanks for posting them.

"These pics make for depressing viewing, i read somewhere that sometimes these guys don't get paid for months due to Moscow's cashflow problems and general inefficiency. Imagine being a conscript out there...!"

Yes, all those shops overflowing with things to buy in Chechnia... they must be pi$$ed.

"Is that some kind of radio/comms euipment? If it is it looks ancient. "

It is a microphone. The fact that it is of different design to what you are used to you find it archaic? Interesting. Would you prefer it if they just copied everything everyone else makes?

The two cables go to each earphone respectively, while the small circle at the top of the box he is holding is where he speaks into (openings front and back).
I am sure the equivelent US system is much better.

Great pics, thanks.
Can anyone here explain why priest is holding a PK? I think it's a PK not sure.
On the first set of pictures, 4th picture, the one with a guy shaving, I think he belongs to VDV, according to his patch at least.

The guy wearing the black flak vest is not Russian

Vlad

He is Russian. Except he is from the eastern part of Russia, from NE Syberia region where they still have the tribes (don't remember the name in English). They actually have a lot in common with Asians in physical characteristics. The problem with tribals in Russian military is that they are very succeptable to a lot of illnesses, due to the fact that their immune system rarely had to face some of the desease-causing bacterias due to extreme cold.

They have bad immune system to cold weather eventhough they are from eastern Russia? Damn, I heard it's pretty damn cold in eastern Russia

Vlad

No, you misunderstood me or I was not clear enough. They have normal immune systems, except they lack certain immunities for deseases like chicken-pox. The deseases that just don't survive well in cold.

Mother winter protects it own from diseases... the insects that carry all sorts of diseases can't survive in most places in Siberia, though the number of sandflies during the short summer period can be as bad as getting malaria...

As for priest - it was catched by photographer during weapons' blessing ceremony.

As for asian looking soldier - he can be from practicaly any part of Russia not only Syberia. Just because Russia is as international as US - all populations were mixed during Soviet Union times and now you can meet here asian looking Russian Ivan Pupkin and european type Korean Alex Kim for example. (there is a lot different nationalities mixed).
