The western bank of the timeless Tigris River takes on a Goyaesque palette as Coalition forces pound their targets on March 21 in the first installment of "Shock and Awe." It is noteworthy that surrounding, nontargeted areas appear as they would on any evening.

Although the sandstorm provided cover for some advancing American troops, most were forced to dig in and wait it out. These soldiers from the Army's 3rd Infantry Division make the best of it at a captured airfield in southern Iraq.

An Iraqi raises his hands while others remain seated on a road in central Iraq near Qal'at Sukkar on March 27. A U.S. Marine keeps his weapon trained on the group. Iraqi irregulars in nonuniformed units have been a thorn in the side of advancing Marines, forcing them into urban areas they had hoped to avoid.

This little girl will long remember that war is a nightmare. She is with many groups of families hastening to get out of Basra, Iraq's second-largest city; Saddam Hussein's troops are still inside the town, which is now surrounded by British forces. Saddam publicized photos of wounded children, blaming Coalition forces for their plight. His minions reportedly made threats against children as a means of getting their parents to fight in the war.

Khudair al-Amiri reunites with his 16-year-old son. He has not seen his boy or the rest of his family since 1991, when he had to flee Iraq after he led an uprising against Saddam Hussein. He ended up in Seattle, where he became a member of the Free Iraqi Forces, a group that provided the U.S. government with translators to help in the war effort.

On April 9, an American soldier and the citizens of Baghdad are present for the fall of Saddam.

Although looting in a postwar environment is as old as war itself, the repeated images of rabid thievery and the pilfering of ancient artifacts (though not as many as originally thought) made this war's plundering seem somehow more decadent. Further, the rampant lawlessness came to symbolize the concerns held by many that the Coalition launched its attack without having a solid postwar plan.
