RAHAT, Israel -- Firing at attackers through a thick pall of smoke, U.S. Embassy guards from Baghdad and German bodyguards for the Saudi royal family safely escorted their charges through an ambush.

The guards were real, but Thursday's attack was a simulated training exercise in a course run by Israelis specializing in security duties in the Middle East.

The participants hope lessons from Israel's conflicts will give them an edge -- both when facing real combat and in securing lucrative security contracts.

But despite Israel's experience in combatting Islamic militants during its 18-year occupation of southern Lebanon and the last four years of Israeli-Palestinian violence, studying here has drawbacks too.

Many of the 23 participants -- which organizers said included four Americans currently working in Baghdad, three Germans who provide security for the Saudi Royal family and Croatian special forces -- would not speak to the media, fearing that if their training in the Jewish state were exposed it would compromise their ability to work in Arab countries hostile to Israel.

The weeklong course, run by former Israeli special forces and secret service operatives, aims to give the guards tactical combat skills and expose them to Arab culture. This combination enables them to work more effectively in high-risk Mideast combat zones, organizers and participants said.

"We feel we can give some of our experience to our friends all over the world," said Tzafrir Pazi, the chief instructor at the Counter Terrorism Training Center, who described himself as a former senior field agent in Israel's Shin Bet security service.

"Israel is known for its expertise in these areas," said Christopher Purdy, 23, currently working as a bodyguard for the No. 2 man at the U.S. Embassy in Iraq, Ambassador James Jeffrey.

Purdy, a former Marine from Seattle who is employed by a civilian security company, said the Israeli knowledge was particularly helpful in dealing with suicide bombers.

"Two weeks ago four members of my team were killed when a suicide bomber infiltrated into the Green Zone," he said referring to the heavily fortified Baghdad enclave that houses the embassy.

He hopes his new training will help him avert similar attacks.

On Thursday the group repeatedly practiced repelling convoy ambushes.

As the role-playing terrorists set off explosives, jumped out from behind rocks and fired blanks at the cars from M-16 rifles, the guards burst from the vehicles hitting the attackers with paint balls, knocking them over and kicking away their rifles.

Sirens wailed and smoke grenades blanketed the area as other convoy guards hastily surrounded the "V.I.P," beating a coordinated retreat to another vehicle that would spirit them out of the danger zone.

"We need this," said Scott Stezelecky, 28, a native of Boston, who is going to Iraq in a month to work for a security firm. "We will be running the gauntlet on the highway of death three or four times a day," he said.

Organizers say the second advantage of the course is a brief immersion into Arab lifestyles, food and culture.

As dawn broke over Rahat, a sprawling Bedouin town in the Negev desert, Stezelecky rose from his guard post to wake the other team members who were clad in Galabiyas, flowing Arab robes, and sleeping on mats in the nearby tent.

To help rouse them, Arabic music blared over a loudspeaker.

The group quickly changed before heading out for morning exercises, followed by a quick breakfast of pita bread, olives, cheese and small glasses of sticky, sweet Bedouin tea poured from a battered metal pot.

While some have already worked in the Middle East, others are hoping that the course will improve their chances of getting a job in the lucrative security field.

Fred Wingo, 46, currently works in corporate security for the international carrier service DHL, but was prepared to pay $10,000 of his own money to do this course and another in risk management.

Wingo, also from Seattle, said the course would both improve his chance for promotion and open up new possibilities for security work in the Mideast.

"Some of the guys in Iraq are making $900 a day," he said.

The Shadow system provides a near real-time, highly accurate, sustainable capability for reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and battle damage assessment. It will significantly improve commanders' ability to detect and engage the enemy by having dominant situational awareness so commanders can "see first, understand first and act decisively." The Shadow itself has a wingspan of 13 feet and can carry a payload of 60 pounds. It has a gross takeoff weight of just over 300 pounds and has significant range and loiter capabilities.

1 He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say of the Lord, "He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust."
3 Surely He shall deliver you from the snare of the fowler And from the perilous pestilence.
4 He shall cover you with His feathers, And under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.
5 You shall not be afraid of the terror by night, Nor of the arrow that flies by day,
6 Nor of the pestilence that walks in darkness, Nor of the destruction that lays waste at noonday.
7 A thousand may fall at your side, And ten thousand at your right hand; But it shall not come near you.
8 Only with your eyes shall you look, And see the reward of the wicked.
9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;
11 For He shall give His angels charge over you, To keep you in all your ways.
12 In their hands they shall bear you up, Lest you dash your foot against a stone.
13 You shall tread upon the lion and the cobra, The young lion and the serpent you shall trample underfoot.
14 "Because he has set his love upon Me, therefore I will deliver him; I will set him on high, because he has known My name.
15 He shall call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him and honor him.
16 With long life I will satisfy him, And show him My salvation."

9 Because you have made the Lord, who is my refuge, Even the Most High, your dwelling place,
10 No evil shall befall you, Nor shall any plague come near your dwelling;

Thank you! :)

Nothing 'Old-Fashioned' about those tracks; they're actually quite expensive and cladded with rubber to protect infrastructure (road surfaces) ...
;)

They also make damn little noise. They are not called "whispering death" for having clanky loose all metal old-fashioned tracks.

Great pics and info today guys. Very good.

RIP to the Black Watch boys killed. Car Bombings anger me greatly. :fork:

I have a quick question for any of you that have trained or served with the M4. In IMTs using the M16 your're told the butt of the rifles is your first point of contact with the ground when going ****e, essentially slamming it into the dirt each time. Is the collapsible stock of the M4 up to that kind of abuse? Is there a different technique required?

Cpl. Nick Romero carries his teammate Cpl. Eugenio Mendoza during the beginning of the stress fire portion of the 4th Annual International Sniper Competition at Fort Benning, Ga., Friday, Nov. 5, 2004. During this event, the 20 two-man teams began with the buddy carry, ran through an obstacle course, and then had a series of long distance shots to make on the range. The two are from the 101st Airborne from Fort Campbell, Ky. The events are designed to simulate combat scenarios in Afghanistan and Iraq.``It's good stuff we never thought about,'' said Mendoza, 27, a sniper with the Army's 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, Ky. ``We're definitely going back and use what we've learned in these events.''

Soldiers of the New Iraqi Army jump out of a vehicle during training at a base near the city of Falluja in western Iraq, November 5, 2004. U.S. troops urged civilians to flee Falluja on Friday and launched air strikes on the rebel city ahead of an assault seen as critical to attempts to pacify Iraq before January elections. The U.S. military says the assault on Falluja will succeed where an April one failed because this time it will be ordered by an Iraqi government and Iraqi forces will be involved. In April, Iraqi units refused to fight with U.S. troops.

Nope, I'm pretty sure that the SMAW is a USMC-unique weapon. I think that both the SMAW and Carl Gustav fire a pretty similar round though.

TAIYUAN, Nov. 6 (Xinhuanet) -- China successfully put its earth resource satellite, the third of ZY-2, into the orbit with a Chinese Long-March 4-B rocket that blasted off at 11:10 am Saturday from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center in north China's Shanxi Province.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2004-11/06/xinsrc_4221101061436656270079.jpghttp://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2004-11/06/xinsrc_42211010614369681008510.jpg

The rocket and satellite separated 12 minutes after the rocket blasts off. The satellite has entered into orbit as scheduled, according to the data from Chinese ground controller, the Xi'an Satellite Monitor and Control Center, in northwest China, indicating the success of the launch.
http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2004-11/06/xinsrc_43211010614362502798511.jpg

The ZY-2, China's second transmitting-type remote sensing satellite, is mainly used for land resource surveying, environmental supervision and protection, city planning, crop yield assessment, disaster monitoring and space scientific experiment.

China has sent the first and second ZY-2 satellites on Sept. 1,2000 and Oct. 27 2002. They are still running in the orbit and have sent back plenty of data.

Compared with the previous two resource satellites, the third one has improved in overall performance and technology.

The Long-March 4-B carrier rocket is an upgraded version of theLong-March 4-A. The launch is the 82nd time that Long March carriers have been used and it is also the 40th continuous successes since China launched the first of its kind on Oct. 1996.

Rocket Launches New GPS Satellite from Florida

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. (*******) - A Boeing Co. Delta 2 rocket successfully launched a new U.S. Air Force Global Positioning Satellite into orbit from Florida Saturday.

******* Photo

The rocket showed no ill effects from having stood on its launch pad in the paths of Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne, which both hit Florida in September.

The hurricanes caused the first in several launch delays for the mission. Technicians spent weeks making sure no flying debris had damaged the rocket inside its cocoon-like mobile gantry.

The $45 million satellite, built by Lockheed Martin, brings the current number of GPS satellites in the U.S. constellation to 30, the Air Force said. It will replace an aging satellite that has been in geosynchronous orbit since 1991.

Boeing said the flight of the three-stage Delta, which roared off the launch pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 12:39 a.m. EST (0539 GMT) was flawless.

"Following a 26-minute flight to space, the launch vehicle successfully deployed the GPS satellite. Today's launch marks the 61st consecutive successful launch aboard the Delta 2," said Boeing spokesman Robert Villanueva.

The next launch for the Delta team is a NASA (news - web sites) science mission scheduled for Nov. 17.
