When many think about Canada, military might isn't the first thing to come to ones mind. Most people think hockey, beer, or god forbid Celine Dion. But what many dont think about, is the sacrifices that Canada, as small as a country as it is, has given to the world since that day in July where we became a sovereign nation. Since then we have fought on African plains, the flooded battlefields of Europe, the dense jungles of south-east asia. We have stormed beaches, jumped out of planes, and climed the steepest mountainsides. We have done this under both the Union Jack, the Red Ensign, and now the Maple Leaf. We have marched across this world to the tune of the bagpipes, and have sailed across oceans to the pings of sonar. We have lost young men, who could have given so much to this world, but chose to fight so that others may feel the freedom they have been given. On this November 11th, lets remember Canada the way we have always been. The quiet neighbour with a big stick and a big heart, who would give everything for his neighbours safety, if only to be thanked with the nod of a head.
We are a thankful nation. And i am a thankful citizen. So on this day i pledge my thanks to out veterans and current soldiers.
May god bless us all.

Fantastic post Evan, I for one have great respect for the Canadian Military, even though many people I know have a small laugh when I even mention it. I for one am glad we have such a fantastic northernly neighbor, one who has always been right with us at times of need
Thanks Canada!

Who else here believes that the Maple Leaf forever (with changes in text) should be the national anthem of Canada?

the only thing i dont like about the current version is that its very unflattering...it was suppose to represent Canada as a people, and yet theres the reference to "sons" and "God" also, the French version is very archaic, talking about bringing christianity into the "new world"...
the melody of the maple leaf forever kicks ass, although the text can be changed to represent the Anglo, Franco, and Native population

Thanks for the respectful comment vance. Your first one was appreciated. But the second one was very distasteful. As with you rob.

--Maple Leaf Forever ---
Maple Leaf forever was Canadas "Unofficial National anthem" at one point, it is also the official march of some of Canada's oldest regiments.
I love this song does anyone have a half decent MP3 of it and able to post me a yousendit.com link Via pm?

Here is a post for a Thread I started on another Forum on November 11th.
Hope you like it.
Please take time to read this thread. ( and forgive Grammer and possible spelling errors plz and thank you. ) plz Sticky this for one day if possible thank you in advance.
November 11th is Rememberance day in Canada and Australia, its Poppy day in England ( I think ), Veterans Day in America and alot of European nations observe a moment of silence at the 11th hour of the 11th month of the year in memory ( originally ) of the signing of the Armistice of 1918, between The Western allied forces and then "Imperial Germany".
Millions of people died in WWI and WWII ( which was also observed on this day after its end ) and in both in many ways these people who werent all that much differant from most of us Died to protect anothers freedom or perhaps if you live in Europe or England your freedom that you cherish now.
People our own ages as young as 15-16 ( there is a 16 year old kid who fought with the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division in Normandie in june 1944 during the D-Day invasions buried in france as well as countless others who lied about thier age to get in.). This isnt a WAR thread nor is it politically affliated, I will be disapointed the mods have to close this due to Political content creeping into and poisening this thread, For just a minute of the day observe a moment of silence for those who have died and those still here that fought hard for what we take for granted every day, wether you are only partially free even if you still feel you could have more in the ways of equality and justice ( a problem that i acknowelege ) the world is better off due to the part of a generation of people willing to lay down thier lives for us to have this.
Ill contribute a Little "Today in History" part to this thread,
Today in history the Canadian Expeditionary Force under the command of Major General Sir Arthur Curry was orderd to take the Town of Mons, this was the original staging point of the British army in the wars start in 1914, the evening of November 10th 1918 just mere Hours befor peace would be signed and the guns would silence, the Canadian troops were orderd to attack the town, this attack wasnt of major strategic value but felt by High command had to happen so they could end the war exactly where they started and make a statement to the germans that they have LOST even more so. Sadly for the soldiers on the ground on Both sides, that meant that more of them would die ( over 66,000 men died in WWI as canadian causualties that is colossal considering it was only a population of less then a few million). Also take a second to think of men and women world wide today fighting and dying in uniform.
"The fighting continued in the Pursuit to Mons up until the last moments of the war. In the last 24 hours before the armistice, the Battalion lost one officer and 11 other ranks killed, and 30 other ranks wounded. Also, the 20th captured the last prisoner taken by a Canadian unit, at 10 A.M. on 11 November 1918, at Mons." - http://www.firstworldwar.com/features/cef.htm
The last Canadian Soldier killed was just 2minutes befor wars end.
Private George Price
"It made it even more tragic that Private Price was killed by a sniper at 10:58, two minutes before the armistice," said Fred Mifflin, Canada's minister of veterans affairs.
Thanks for reading this and just type RIP if u have to but it shouldnt be forgotten
Gods Speed to the men of the US Army and Marine Corps, Iraqi soldiers, USAF and Navy personal, AIRBORNE, and Rangers alike, and wish them safe return from the Offensive in Fallujah which rages today, these men will have no moment of Silence, they fight as countless others did, regardless of your opinions on this war they sacrifice thier freedom and lives so that you dont have to
