Can anyone find pictures of the Colt M653/ CAR-15 in use in Vietnam? I hear it wasn't there, but if anyone can find photos to disprove that, I'd like to see. (Besides Platoon...)

afaik the only short barrelled, retractable stocked versions of the M-16 to see service in Vietnam were the model 609, 610 and 629. The 653 was put into production after the US left Vietnam and the only major user was the Phillipines.

The 653 is put into production 1973, US pulls out of Vietnam 1973.

The Model 653 M16A1 carbine wasn't used in Vietnam. Colt started making them in 1973, and the US government didn't buy any until 1976, after American involvement was over.

The Model 655 was a sniper rifle variant of the M16A1 that saw very limited use in Vietnam.

In Vietnam, the Model 607 CAR-15 SMG, the Model 609 XM177E1 Commando, the Model 610 XM177 GAU-5/A, and the Model 629 XM177E2 were used.

The movie Platoon was made in the Philippines, which is why they had Model 653Ps.

What about M608 - CAR15 "Airforce Survival Rifle"? Was it ever produced in any significant quantities?

Only about 10 of the RO608 CAR-15 Survival Rifles were ever made.

I'll go with a home-brewed gun made from parts from various sources. The handguard looks like it was made in someone's garage, and if you notice the barrel's been cut back to under the sight triangle and gas-block.

Colt's 605/A CAR-15 Carbine also made an appearance in Vietnam.

Its not really known if Iran makes M-16 knockoffs but if you look at the pics below of their new Khyber rifle you'll see some M16 clones in the background. They either made them or its possible they acquired them elsewhere (the handguard looks like the Norinco CQ-16's).

Well, if not any photos of the gun in Vietnam, how about in the hands of any forces anywhere? I'm just looking for pictures of it. Not a very common rifle.
