The sea close to the shore of Fangataufa Atoll, about 750 miles from the French Polynesian capital of Papeete, in the South Pacific turns white following the detonation of an underground French nuclear test in this image taken from French Military footage, Sunday October 1, 1995. The test, the second detonated by France in a month, measured more than five times stronger than the 20 kiloton earlier test, carried out on Sept. 5 on the neighbouring Atoll of Mururoa.

harman, The Kyoto Protocol is not going to stop global warming. Sorry to burst your bubble ...
.... yet it is the start of real dialogue on the causes and effects of climate-changing greenhouse gasses. Developing nations will only contribute, and on an unprecedented scale.
The biggest annual increase in carbon emissions since records began comes from the forest fires created by land clearance in developing nations, principally South East Asia.
In total, the fires covered about 60,000 square kilometres of Indonesia's peat swamp overall - an area twice the size of Belgium. [referenced for Phil642]
Carbon produced by the fires accounted for 13%-40% of that year's total worldwide emissions - produced by the burning of fossil fuels such as oil, coal and gas.

No doubt volcanic discharges influence atmospheric dynamics...BUT:
from your very interesting article:
This research undercuts claims by greenhouse skeptics that no warming has occurred during the last two decades.
Volcanoes masked the warming of our troposphere basically (due to SO2 emissions- let me speculate- that function as an anti-greenhouse gas)...volcanoes did not mend the problem. Arctic ice is still melting twice as fast than expected.

The Arctic ice is melting no faster nor slower than it did during the 1920's. It's just more noticed this time around. (Remember that the media in those times was more obsessed with the shortness of womens skirts, celebrety weddings and that new 'naughty' negro music. Much different to the dedicated and well educated media we have today right)
The volcanoes have had major effects on our climate. Remember Mt Pinatubo in the Phillippines? That was a very cold year. Remember that at the same time as it was pumping out SO2, it was also pumping out megatonnes of CO2. It's the mico ash that appears to have caused the cooling that year, not the SO2.
