Hijacked American Airlines Flight 11 from Boston bound for Los Angeles, CA crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center. Fifteen minutes later, hijacked United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston bound for Los Angeles, CA crashed into the south tower of the World Trade Center. Both towers collapsed, causing around 2,823 casualties and hundreds of injuries. The terrorists were said to have used small knives and box cutters to overtake the planes. Al Qaeda is responsible for this and three other hijacked planes on this day that caused over 3,000 total deaths. Note: Authorities put the final death toll from the twin towers' destruction at 2, 823 (CNN 05/30/02).


An hour after the attacks against the World Trade Center in New York, a hijacked American Airlines Flight 77 from Dulles International Airport bound for Los Angeles, CA crashed into the helicopter landing pad on the west side of the Pentagon, causing 189 fatalities and extensive damage to the structure of the Pentagon. Al Qaeda is responsible for this and three other hijacked plane attacks that killed more than 3,000 people in total. Note: As of 02/01/02, the disaster toll stands at 189 fatalities. This number includes 125 victims on the ground and 64 passengers and crew of American Airlines Flight #77 (Washington Post, 02/01/02).


United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark, N.J. was hijacked and diverted from its flight path to San Francisco and crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The plane crashed shortly after it turned in the direction of Washington, DC. It is believed that the hijackers were overtaken by the passengers on board and this is what caused the crash in a field in Shanksville. The hijacked plane could have been headed toward the White House or Capitol Building in Washington, DC. This is one of four hijacked planes on this morning that were used to cause a total of over 3,000 fatalities. Al Qaeda is responsible for all four attacks. Note: As of 12/20/01, the disaster toll stands at 44 fatalities (CBS Morning News, 12/20/01).


A group calling themselves, "The Autonomous Decorators" claimed responsibility for throwing paint bags at the Thuringian Interior Ministry building. They said the attack was to protest the arrest of three suspected members of the Revolutionary Cells/Red Zora, and they threatened further "purposeful actions against the institutions that support this system."


An unmentioned number of trees in the Nez Perce National Forest's otter wing timber sale area southeast of Grangeville, Idaho were spiked by a "nameless Earth Liberation Front (ELF) cell." In the statement left by the group, the Nez Perce was named as one of many national forests that has been scarred from excessive logging, a practice they regard as a financial drain and an ecological disaster.


SRI LANKA. A group calling itself the Internet Black Tigers launched email attacks against several Sri Lankan missions around the world. They claim to specialize in "suicide e-mail bombings" in order to counter government propaganda that is electronically distributed.


Six Jewish boys were arrested after stoning and car-jacking the cars of two Palestinian men. No injuries were reported.


The tires of forty-three cars belonging to Arabs were slashed by Kakh members. Kakh claimed responsibility for the attack made in response to the terrorist attack in which Ya'el Mevar was killed.


An Islamic militant group warned that Muslim women who did not wear a veil would face "serious consequences." Soon afterwards, five women were attacked with acid by Lashkar-e-Jabbar (LeJ) activists in Sringar. One man was also injured. Other attacks have been carried out with paint, but Lashkar-e-Jabbar (LeJ) has since threatened to shoot women who do not abide by the dress code. The group has also demanded that Hindu women wear Bindi on their forehead and Sikh women cover their heads with a saffron cloth.


SRI LANKA. In early January the British and U.S.Embassies in Colombo received letters warning that tea destined for export had been poisoned. Similar letters were received by Australian and Canadian missions. Originating with the Tamil Eelam Army, a small guerrilla group, the letters asserted that Sri Lankan tea shipments had been contaminated with potassium cyanide. While the threats were officially discounted, the Sri Lankan Government initiated "precautionary measures" and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced that it was testing all black tea imported from Sri Lanka for possible cyanide contamination.


Suicide attackers of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Sea Tigers rammed their vessels into a ship carrying fuel near Point Pedro. At least five Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) boats carrying explosives were involved in the attack. Voice of Tigers Radio reports that two of the attackers were women. The attack was carried out in retaliation for an 2 October 2001 Sri Lankan Navy attack on a Sea Tiger Base.


AUSTRALIA. Several delegates to an international Assyrian Congress meeting in Sydney were made ill from food poisoned with mustine hydrochloride. Delegates from Iraq allegedly provided the food. Two delegates who received contaminated food had previously criticized the Iraqi Government's use of violence.


ITALY. The Organization of Metropolitan Proletariat and Oppressed Peoples, a group claiming support for the Palestinian uprising in the West Bank, notified authorities that it had injected poison into grapefruits imported from Israel. Contaminated grapefruits were discovered in Naples and Rome and the government took all grapefruits off the market. The "poison" turned out to be a substance which causes color tainting but is not harmful.


BELGIUM. A Palestinian group called the Arab Revolutionary Army claimed it injected exported Israel oranges with mercury to sow panic and wreck the country's economy. Five Dutch children fell ill and European officials checked thousands of oranges. Two oranges were found in Holland and West Germany spiked with mercury. A group calling itself the Arab Revolutionary Army claimed responsibility, saying, "We do not intend to kill people in nations that import the oranges but to sabotage the Israel economy." Authorities felt the oranges must have been spiked in Rotterdam where they were shipped for repackaging and shipment to Europe. A lemon injected with mercury was found in Heverlee, Belgium, near the university town of Louvain. And a London woman found an Israeli orange spiked with mercury in a bag of fruit she bought in a London department store on February 7, making England the fifth country where poisoned fruit was discovered in one week. An envelope, containing Adamsite was found at Ostend Airport. Adamsite is a derivative of arsenic and is used, among other things, in rocket fuel. The poison acts as an irritant and is only mildly potent. The people who opened the letters suffered eye irritation and trouble breathing. This was one of at least seven letters found to contain this substance in Belgium on this day.


The Navarrese Employment Service in Alsasua, Navarre was damaged by a group of six masked individuals. The entrance was damaged with graffiti marks like "Murderous bosses" and "Prekarietatea stop" and dumped with plastic canisters of animal blood. The group had left fliers supporting a union strike called by the Basque Workers' Solidarity (ELA-STV) and the Union of Patriotic Workers (LAB).


A group of four or five hooded youths burst into a temporary job agency, seized a fire extinguisher off the wall, and sprayed foam all over the furniture, a computer and a photocopier. The attack caused serious damage to the office.
