Is it just me or does the thing at top look like a toked-up frog?

Is there any special meanings?

looks like a special forces for the marines...maybe frog men...
Trying to decipher the meaning of each feature in the logo, there is the Navy/MC Parachutist wings which are self explanatory, a "1" for Detachment One, and the skull over the blue at the bottom looks very much like the patch of the Marine Raiders from WWII. Otherwise I really do not know the significance of everything else. I also agree that the SCUBA symbol at the top looks a little weird...

The dagger and the lightning bolt probably have something to do with being "swift and silent"...the appearence of the dagger usually has some "stealth" related meaning, while lightning bolts usually refer to speed or to overwhelming force.

Cool. On the usmc.mil site it says the picture was taken from the SOCOM activation ceremony. Anyone know when this unit was activated?

Aren't the knife and lighting bolt the symbols of SOCOM? I could be wrong, but maybe..
Also, the Red/Blue/Yellow background almost looks like US Army Armor division patches.
My question is why are the white stars aligned like they are and not symetrical?

Check Star constellations and see if there's a match?

That's supposed to be the southern cross.
There are so many versions of it floating around. (Aussie and Kiwi flags, the old 1st MarDiv patch etc.)
Yeah the frog does look wierd but thats why they're called frogs.
The mask used to be an oval on the bubble. (I'm talking about the Navy Dive School badge)
I'm wondering if they actually changed it or the artist was using a rebreathing unit as a model, (I'm pretty sure of the latter).

I'm pretty sure Det.1 is being created in the idea of living up to the heritage of the Marine Raiders which were disbanded during WW2 (anyone know why?), hence the patch at the bottom.
From what I've seen, there aren't any photos around of Det.1 on exercise or in Iraq or anything. The only picture on USMC.mil I've seen of them was one of a Det.1 member showing a laser designator to a former Marine Raider.

If I am not mistaken they are still in training with various NSW units and should be deployed in actual operations sometime next year.

In the last year or so the Marines updated their Combat Diver breast insignia to a more technically correct one. Thus the bubble with the wings represent Force Recon.

The Raiders were disbanded after Guadacanal I think-- same reason why the "Para-Marines" were.
They were great at making hit and run raids (Makin) but when used as regular Marine Infantry, they got mauled up pretty bad- although that's partly because they were assigned tougher missions.
Also, there was a strong movement in the Corps against the raiders. The thinking at the time being that the Corps was already an elite unit, and that creating another elite unit within an elite unit was redundant and made good Marines into arrogant and overly-prideful in the title of "Raider" (because naturally Marines are NEVER arrogant to begin with ;) )
Elite is a general term with regards to Marines because if you mean elite as in Navy SEALs etc then they (as a whole) are most certainly not but if you mean well trained and highly motivated then yes they are. An exception would be units like Force Recon or this new SOCOM Detachment because they are without a doubt elite in every sense.

The lightnig bolt could be one of two things, and I'm just guesing here, Speed or it could represent the ANGLICO Marines assigned to the unit.
The dagger is pretty much the universal symbol of special operations and commando units around the world. The three colors could be the various methods of insertion land, sea and air, also the some of the ANGLICO embloms have color scheme similar to that.
