Has anyone ever heard weird or odd rumors when deployed or in a war. For example there were rumors of aliens in World War II with regard to "foo fighters"

Military bases are some of the most superstitious places in the world. There are too many to tell.

Gremlins were a WW2 myth\rumor(american and british). If something didn't work they blamed it on gremlins.

I think that comes from a ww2 cartoon, where gremlins were sabotaging hitlers plane, and he was none the wiser. The name gremlin caught on, and been used ever since (i think)

Mark Bowden wrote a documentary type book called Killing Pablo. A good read, I might suggest.

I heard something about some US fighter planes getting jumped by Russian planes in World War II and then shooting them down. Then the US kept it secret. Not sure if it was true or not.

Wasn't there a program about it a few months ago on one of the discovery channels or sommat. Some sceintists and animal people went looking for batman in the jungle. If they had come to England then they could have found Robin. If they went to Luton they would have seen robin.

This sort of thing did happen, though not like that.

Some American P-51's over Berlin bounced a flight of Russian planes including Kozhedub. The result was the P-51's got shot down, so Stalin ordered some of the Russian pilots shot, and wanted the surviving P-51s to be shot aswell, although it didn't happen

Yep, this happened several times toward the end of the war. One german pilot even claims to have instiagted this once by flying through both formations and shooting at both groups. There is a lot of documantation on this type of occurrence.

Oh I also forgot there is also a story about some GI's who released a werewolf in Germany by extingushing this eternal flame that supposedly banned the beast from the local village. It then apparently went over the fence at a USAF airfield and scared the crap out of the SP's dogs. I think there is a site out there called Werewolf legends from Germany or Werewolf stories from Germany.

The first Gulf War something was "spotted" in the sky and followed by radar and planes only later to get away.

Soviet Winterwar veterans claim that Finnish bunkers were covered with armor plates that had springs under them so that almost every round they fired bounced away...
The most popular rumor is that Finnish snipers used trees as hiding places.
I can't imagine a worse place for a sniper to use as a firing position than a tree. Our snipers never never did that in reality.

It's understandable that some soldiers make these stories, war is a sh*tty and scary thing.

If a LRRP would have seen one he would have cut it's ears off.

One of my old LRRP tac officers had a photo of him holding a coat hanger full of ears. The guy with the fewest matching ears on return from patrol had to buy all the beer.

It's a Merrie Melodies cartoon called "Russian Rhapsody that you mention.

http://www.bcdb.com/bcdb/cartoon.cgi?film=244&cartoon=Russian%20Rhapsody

I doubt though that the Merrie Melodies writers "invented" the Gremlin - a quick Google on their origin and scan of a few pages leads me to believe that they are most likely an English invention, and are often mentioned as being associated with aircraft. Dictionary.com has a pretty comprehensive etymology, which pegs them as a 1920's RAF myth, found here:

http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=gremlin

Enough said, I imagine, eh?

I read a very intersting book about various UFO occurences, faked and otherwise unexplained. A lot of the more bizarre ones can't be explained even through there are hundreds of witnesses, radar returns, physical dammage, photographs etc. One that sticks out in being increadibly bizarre was a story about a B52 that went missing in Vietnam and was found later ontop of a forrest completly undamaged, as if it was sat there but with no flightcrew.

I can't say if it's true or not as the information on it is sketchy at best.

But in WW1 a small squad of German soldiers captured a Canadian soldier at crusified him. This suposodly happened at a couple of times during the war.

Some quick Googling will get you this...

Salt and Pepper (http://www.miafacts.org/greer.htm).

June, 1966-UFO incident, Nha Trang, South Vietnam (http://ufocasebook.com/1966vietnam.html).

Another Vietnam UFO (http://www.mysterymag.com/yourexperiences/index.php?page=article&subID=107&artID=402).

Here's a book about it by Kregg Jorgenson (who's been there, done that): Very Crazy, G.I.! : Strange but True Stories of the Vietnam War (http://www.sciencesbookreview.com/Very_Crazy_GI__Strange_but_True_Stories_of_the_Vietnam_War_0804115982.html).

Here's a post I wrote awhile back on a similar subject: Weird War Tales (http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/viewtopic.php?t=26937&highlight=).
