Hey,
I have a USMC Polartec Fleece and am planning to take it with me to the desert where the temperature can fall to around.. 30 degrees at night? I know my fleece isnt going to be enough by itself
Anyone know any goood mid/lighweight shirts to wear under my SPEAR to help with warmth. I've been looking at the Go-lite Lite/Mid-Weight series but I dont really know much about this.

It will be enough. I come from NY where it gets about 30 outside, and I wear my Columbia fleece (it is an old liner to a waterproof parka that works as a stand alone, that probably ins't nearly as warm as PT300) over wicking, uninsulating shirts, like my Underarmour Heatgear tees. If you are moving you are fine, and you get used to the cold after awhile. I live in the cold and the wet from before november to may, and I find it to be enough. As long as you aren't shivering, you are fine.

any sort of thermal top that wicks should be good to go...
you might want to look into getting a shell also...that jacket wont stop wind...and if you dont stop wind...any air you have around your body that was warm goes away and well your cold then

i would be weary of under armor...its a synthetic...if you get burned with that stuff on...its gonna be ugly....granted the only fire i come in contact with is in the fireplace in the lodge...just saying

i've got the the spear fleece, and currently its about 30 degrees here in peoria. believe me when i say you wont need anything fancy. a plain white t, and a cotton long sleeve ought to be enough. you could even throw in another light long sleeve over the top.
just make sure you also double layer your pants, wear a hat, and gloves.

Sure are right about that...don't see too much cotton nowadays.
I'm considering getting that Silk crewman shirt from REI. These things dont look too warm... but I guess they are? How warm are they.

Id like to go to Afghanistan or something which would be where I would be using that stuff. BUT I dont want to go to Afghanistan so I'll just go to the next best thing... the desert in the winter!
I hate hot... i'd rather have cold

If you're worried about flash/flam hazards silk is the way to go - it insulates unlike cotton (which actually causes you to loose body heat when wet), chars rather than melts and will protect you (to an extent) from outer garments melting.
I'm from the generation immediately after the Falklands war where dozens of guys suffered serious burns from melting underwear (especially on the ships that were hit). I've served with many and seen the scars and the plastic surgery needed.
I wear silk on Ops. Underarmour is great for training or if you've got a nomex suit...

You can get woollens that dont scratch and dont melt - made from a very fine merino wool. Cabelas do them, or at least they used to. Very warm, but bulkier than silk -and you dont get too ripe in them after a few days.

I'll just ditto the silk option. If melt hazard is a significant risk, I would not wear a synthetic layer next to my skin. I have seen what happens when clothing melts onto (into) a burn, it's not pretty.
Otherwise, helly hansen lifa shirts are great, although they do start to honk after a while (hence the term 'smelly helly'). You can get wool mix versions now, they might be slightly better in the melt hazard department.
If you want to really protect against melt hazard, Arktis produce a merino wool/nomex pile shirt (like the British army's 'norwegian shirt') with a roll neck and zip.
underarmour wont keep you warm, but it will keep you dry you didnt get any polypro? polypro is real lightweight. you could just buy a long sleeve brown t shirt and wear the fleece over that, that should be plenty...

Gall's Law Enforcement sells a lot of silk wicking shirts meant for wear under body armour for the cheap... I doubt their insulation properties are good, but they do wick and they aren't as bad as having a synthetic fused to your skin.

Silk is good, plus it feels nice on the "boys"

They real warm? I'm just really looking for a nice warm shirt. Don't have any experience with silk. Would I be wearing JUST the silk over my skin then like my Polartec Fleece? in say... 30 -40 degrees. It could just be the picture but the REI one looks thicker and.. warmer? But noone really has the REI

the ones i have from EMS are just for wicking...by them selves they are thin enough to show nipple...layer them and they help...but on their own no its not gonna keep you warm

Is that true for all silks. Because I was really looking for a inner shirt to help with warmth

That looks pretty warm. Only problem i'd have though... These things needa be at least semi-tight on your body. And im not very tall. An adult small is just a bit big on me.
PS: I just ordered mine
