When you have lasek surg. you are grounded from physical work for while at least 1-2 month, there complications risk, repeat surg if there are small improvments or non, control visits so this takes you from active life for few months:
Family cases of lasek surg.
incapacitation=cant drive car, ride bike, lift weights..
first 6 months incapacitation, repeat surg., case astigmatism
second 3 months incapacitation, case astigmatism
So army probably don't want to risk for their own if glasses are enough and they can browse from healthy
I don't really know about regular units, but in dutch SF u simply can't get in when u need glasses or lenses to function...

US Navy SEAL officers can get laser eye surgery. US Navy pilots have not been cleared yet...
i didn't say u cudn't get surgery? btw i dont know how things are when u are already in and ur eyes are degrading, all i know is that u can't have glasses or lenses when u want to get in, but if u'd get laser surgery that has the required effect then everything should be fine...

I had my eyes done and was jumping out of planes within 2 weeks. There is very little down time, it is nowhere close to 6 months. The Army is doing it for free now, almost all SpecOps have had it done, and now basic grunts are lining up.

There is also disfunction matter and surg. method used, if you had ?far seing? or ?short seing? you can have less invasive and cheaper surg., than astigmatizm, also they ussualy don't do(when astigmatizm) two eyes at once
b/c there is quite big chance that corrected eye will be ****ed-up so treatment takes longer.

It's not allowed in the UK armed forces. Get it done and you risk dismissal - the best I've read of is with 2 RAF ground crew who had it done - 12 months medical downgrade.

just to follow up what MSG Dman said -
You can get it done, but it has to be done by military docs (I don't really know why it makes a difference.) Getting it done by an outside professional is a big no-no. I know a couple guys who've gotten it done prior to graduation and have loved it. Hopefully I'll be able to get that too.

But if you do that before enlistment as civil , there is no problem later?

the reason why military doctors do the surgery to people already in the military is because they don't want to do it unnecessarily. There have been many cases when the procedure was performed when the number of diopters of the pupils was greater than the tolerance allowed. that would cause big, big, big problems with eyesight, usually involving using both contacts and very thick glasses :( .
I know that in the Navy, if you get it done before entry to the Naval Academy, you will be disqualified.
if you have LASIK or LASEK done before enlisting or commissioning, the army will simply administer a phsyical, inc eye check, and thats about it. given a lot of paperwork and prepatory checks, even pilots in the army are getting this done.

It probably has something to do with letting the Army Docs 'practice'. Nothing wrong with that, I'm just sayin'.
