Eco-Terrorism Suspected in Md. Fires

By STEPHEN MANNING, Associated Press Writer

INDIAN HEAD, Md. - More than a dozen expensive homes under construction were burned down early Monday in a suburban Washington housing development that had been criticized by environmentalists because it is next to a nature preserve, officials said.

An FBI (news - web sites) agent said the fires may have been set by environmental extremists.

A dozen homes were destroyed and 29 others damaged near the state's Mattawoman Natural Environment Area. No injuries were reported. The damage was estimated at at least $10 million.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

Faron Taylor, a deputy state fire marshal, said investigators believe fires were set in at least four of the homes, which were priced at $400,000 to $500,000. Taylor refused to say what led investigators to conclude it was arson.

"At this point, our knowledge of the methodology is shared by us and the perpetrator, and we don't want to share that with anyone else," Taylor said.

A Sierra Club (news - web sites) report had called the development "quintessential sprawl" because it is far from existing infrastructure and "threatens a fragile wetland and important historical sites near the Chesapeake Bay."

After the fires, the Sierra Club issued a statement saying it "strongly condemns all acts of violence in the name of the environment."

FBI spokesman Barry Maddox said FBI agents were on the scene and would investigate whether the fires were an act of ecoterrorism.

"Anything and everything will be considered, but we're not labeling this anything other than suspicious fires," Maddox said.

The blazes were reported before 5 a.m., drawing firefighters from four counties to the subdivision about 25 miles south of the nation's capital. The houses, on lots of about a quarter-acre each, were spread across a 10-acre area, Taylor said.

"This was a very, very affluent neighborhood under construction," Taylor said.

Taylor said the fire would be investigated by agents from the Maryland fire marshal's office and the federal Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which is routinely brought in to help investigate large fires.

no cause is an excuse to commit arson and many of the other crimes eco terrorists commit. Here in Canada we had news footage of masked environmentalists causing damage to forest company vehicles and buildings, and spiking trees etc... None of us were killed or seriously injured but the potential was there and yet the environmental groups excuse it claiming that the forests were more valuable to the people.... more valuable ... then our lives :bash:

Once these environmental wacko groups hit the US citizens radar with attacking suburbia, they will feel the wrath. The environmentalist activists will be labeled as domestic terrorists and treated just like Johnny Hadji.

The Sierra Club and others have been at forefront of the lawsuits and nonsense affecting this housing development. When the lawsuits failed, the ELF types move in.

You easily spot them in a crowd. They have dread locks, unbathed, wearing hemp clothing, and smelling like percula oil.

Here is another story were the environmentalists resort to terrorism when their lawsuits fail:

Clearly this is terrorism and I doubt the people committing these acts would deny that. When somebody dies from one of these acts, I imagine the wrath will finally descend. Unfortunately, I don't see anything happeneing until then.

Maybe but it took a while to clamp down on the militias and anti-abortionists.

Have you ever come across any of these people in real life, you would have a problem spotting a hardcore ALF member they kinda blend in with the rest of us.

YES, and I am afraid I have to agree with you, they do blend in, their attitudes are extreme not their wardrobe.
The hippy style ones arent usually the hardcore, they are usually just there to demonstrate about damn near anything. I have seen the same group in Victoria demonstrate for 4 different things and one of the things was in complete conflict with the other three :cantbeli: I absolutely was floored
