Do you prefer a modular rig, such as the US RACK or something with a fixed amount of pouches, such as an Arktis?

All I can think of is MALICE clips or whatever is used to affix pouches to a modular rig breaking. 550 cord usually stays intact for a long time, so there's another way to do things, although it makes it slower to modify.
Personally I prefer fixed. Just my opinion.

Mixed ones. As with CCG vest. Front pouches fixed, some internal pockets and stuff - sides and back modular. Just keep in mind that some gear doesnt suit certain roles too well - James job may not require full patrol vest with backpack - some small modular plate carrier would be better if I get the idea right.
Anyway I'm Arktis man. ;)

Modular is the best way to go, Using the MOLLE compatible vest such as the Eagle MLCS, you can mount pouches any where you want and as many or few as you want.

I'll go with modular. The important thing is that by trial and error you learn about what is best worn where. With modular rigs you can keep changing untill you have the best places for the most important gear. Another thing about modular vests is the multimission functionality; you'll be able to throw off things you don't need for a particular mission, or add things you will need. All sounds pretty cliche, I know.......
I used an arktis classic chest rig for three years. It served me well, but I just ordered a wasatch based on the criteria above and a wish to get more realestate.... With 5,56mm, 9mm, 40mm, smoke, handgrenades and all the other **** you just need the space, and preferably where I want it

I'm using a Paraclete right now... soft armor, plates, and pouches all in one unit. It is the most comfortable armor I've ever worn... Plate hangers seem to sag, so the front plate with the pouches covers your belly, and the back plate covers your shoulders.

I would go with (no experience coming from me) something like a Wa/Weesatch or some of the Helcats that have integrated magazine pouches and plate pockets.

SMGLee: Bling bling guns you got there. What state are you in?
Just from personal experience, I liked using chest rigs for direct action operations, such as staying on one place for less than 4 days, mostly doing MOUT and crap. But I always switch back to plain old ALICE gear with H suspenders when I'm out in the boonies, just patrolling or whatever. So in that idea, I like Modular because I can carry both the vest AND some suspenders/belt. If I want to go light on a patrol, I can take the pouches off my vest, and attach them to my LBE belt. Versatile.

Only way I would go non-modular is after years of wearing a vest and loving it and then wanting to replicate it when the first wore out. However, someone always comes out with a better one before I could wear out the old one! I think Argyl will back me up here; I have had to change the way and where something went while in the field before!

I've generally found modular to be useful too, the only time it hurts is when you compare a modular chest harness to a fixed one in $$, pouch for pouch. It's *alot* more expensive to buy all the pouches, the only reason it's worth the extra expenditure is that they truly are more useful in the long run.

BTW... just wondering..
Does anyone go out to the desert or some remote place or whatnot, camp out, maybe do some shooting, maybe some offroading ;)
Stuff MilitaryMorons does.
I'm planning a trip to the Anza Borrego Desert around the 18th.. so just wondering if you guys do, and what do you do/where do you go.

Anza Borrego?
Bro, be careful. I've been going there for years.
I train constantly in the desert. I assume you are form SoCal? Remember a few weeks ago with that "freak storm"? We got stuck in it.
Here is what our camp looked like when we woke up.

I used my Modular vest from SOTech regularly.
I find the modyular vest gives the user an option to change the loads around to better fit the user. I had my vest set up and it took a few trips to figure out some of the finer placement of different pouches. stuff that got in the way got move around and pouches that need to be accessed faster got more priority.
Tw, Here is a pic with the guns. The FSBE was a gift from a friend and it was black and I painted with Brownell
dark earth brown paint.

I believe in actuall chest rigs not load bearing labbeled as chest rigs. Modular would be nice but the prices and patterns of pouches are severly limited especially if your into russian kit like I am (they all have pouches in LES pattern, but not tiger or kamysh) I've always been a fan of the chicom chest rigs, they just look bad ass with the crossed straps in the back. If its a real chest rig, it shouldnt wrap around your sides. The point of the chest rig is to carry everything on your chest, not your sides. Fixed pouches work well, make do with what you got I guess.

I have the choice of two, both fixed. On short hops, I use a chest-rig, which I also use during sniper-competition, because I can easily wear it the wrong way around and go ****e without problems.
On longer hikes, I wear my OPS-vest, mostly because I can put EVERYTHING that I would EVER need in there. It holds water and food for 48 hours and I modified it so I can zip a Berghaus / Bergen daypack onto the back. The sucker is heavy as a mother....er, but it get's me where I need to go!
All gear has standard loadout that I share with my buddies. If one goes down, you know where to find ALL his kit! This goes as far as the way we stuff our smock and trouser pockets!
