$400,000 in a year? Where do you live?

Chicagoland area... i should have clarified: I want to do surgery, maybe orthopaedic surgery or thoracic surgery, or maybe anesthesiology.

Orthopaedic and thoracic surgeons have starting salaries around $300,000 a year, depending on how much you work (hours per week).

Anesthesiologists make around $300,000 at the peak of their careers, while surgeons make upwards of $350,000-$400,000 at the peaks of their careers (who would want to do that when you have no spare time for family, etc.).

You'd be surprised how much stuff like that actually happens. I did a DUI
stop once and the driver pulls over and then climbs into the passenger seat, buckles himself in, and fakes like he was asleep. The guy tried to convince me it wasn't him who was driving, that he'd been in the passenger seat the whole time. Needless to say, he didn't have to worry about driving anywhere else that night as I provided his transportation for the remainder of the evening.

Yeah, I know a couple of excellent doctors, and they definitely don't make that much.

They must have been residents. They average around 50,000 - 60,000 a year. Not bad seeing that you're still learning learning and all from the "attending". You get big money when you've done your stint at the hospital. The "attending" doctors make 300,000 and up a year. Spending 1-2 hours to do your rounds at the hospital and go back to your clinic for the rest of the day.

I myself was an art director for Hewlett Packard's Design Group in Houston but have move on to a smaller firm with more creative freedom. No more one brand enviroments. woot

Well I think that despite a few more pounds on the average weight, American physiology doesn't differ drastically from the British. It's a bit ridiculous that a UK-trained doctor has to go through all that crap to be allowed to practice in the US. All that is really needed is an adapter course to get used to the US system/drug names etc.

that's true, there should be adapter courses, but who is going to teach those courses? medical schools rarely accept transfers from other U.S. medical schools, so they would not be the base of education for foreign M.D.s.

The US really needs to have an accreditation programme for foreign medschools, or just trust that if the NHS will let a doctor work for them then they're good enough for the non-existant national system in the US. ;)

yes, the US needs an accredidation program. For instance, my mother had a masters degree in Poland but when she came to the US, the equivalent was only a double-bachelor degree. :(

non-existant national system in the US?

what does that mean? The US does not have socialized medicine.

Sabre
10-14-2003, 12:43 PM
It tends to be that way.

I think the only reason for not doing it is that the US want's to encourage it's own medical schools to keep providing the doctors it needs by turning away foreigners.

ANyways im going back and am going to attend Algonquin college in Ottawa and take a police foundations course while being in the reserves at the same time. I hear that - I'm going to be a professional student until I'm 32 (about 3 more years). Got my BS in mechanical engineering, tried the engineering thing for a while, got bored and decided to go back to get my MBA. After two years to finish that, I decided that was too easy, but that I like the school thing so much, I signed on for four more years. I'm in the middle of my first year in the PhD program. It's a cushy life - we have the highest fellowships in the country (though, that isn’t saying much), the hours are flexible (you can choose which 22 hours in each day you work) and we don't have to dress up or even go to school all that much. Of course, there's lots of reading and discussing of research papers, very difficult course work and being used by Professors as their workhorses. It's cool though – we typically make $120 - $180K starting after graduation.

Speaking of college.... how hard is it to get a doctorate?

It all depends on the field and school. You have to be very good in your field, but also very dedicated to figuring things out - do you like hard puzzles without the box top to look at to see what the solution looks like? You'll probably have to take the GRE's (or what ever test your field requires) and get in the high 90's percentile. Other than that, do your research on the schools, their programs and the typical life of their students. It's a big commitment of time and effort, so a good match is essential.

WOW.. quite a few Fed or DOD related here. I also work at a Defense contractor company.

I am also looking for a career change. I am part of the logistics chain where I work but hate it. I make peanuts on top of that.
I like talking about legal, pshychological, and tactical stuff. I have a creative side as well.. I draw, and cook pretty well. I used to do graphics and illustration for my brigade while I was active duty. Mostly SOP coversheets, t-shirt and challenge coin designs. I did a couple murals and photo displays for several buildings. I don't do it now though.

I can't seem to get focused on one thing. I have sporadic college here and there. (mostly IT and Business) I haven't even started with my military training.

Dammit it is frustrating. I gotta find a niche for myself.

Ditto, except the government doesn't give me shyte... Being a white, middle-class student sucks... :-( Parent makes too much on paper, but not enough in real life; hello debt... :-(

Why should the government give you anything?

That's got to be a great job. I'd like my retirement job to be working in a military or firearms museum.

I looked over this whole thread and some of the earlier folks that were students are now on here as BTDTs. Time flies.

Time does fly... In May I will have been a government contractor for twice as long as I was on active duty in the USMC. :|

I need to get cracking on writing books and starting a tactical clothing company that is cooler and less expensive than TAD gear.

My fancy measuring beaker, lab coat and safety goggle test failed, so I dumped the thermometer into a hacked up fruit juice bottle full of ice and had success. We can certify it for another 6 months... I think a real scientist just rolled over in his grave.

Why should the government give you anything? Well, they'll give anyone that doesn't speak English a handout and pay for their schooling so I was under the impression that I, an actual citizen and contributing member or the United States, might be able to reap some of those same benefits. Also, forgot the /(semi)sarcasm in first post. /(semi)sarcasm.

Head south to Wilmington whenever you can. The night life isn't that bad at all for us 30-something year olds. Stay away from J-ville at all cost!

I'm a builder based in West London. My main bread and butter is groundwork because I have a mini digger. The building game where I am is pretty rough so I have started up a video production company. Looking at weddings and stuff like that. Did my first job on new years eve. Very nice money.

Psychologist. First day off in 4 years...huzzah. (Hence the lack of posts)
Spend most of my lunch hour banging my head on my desk. It's hard to deal with civvies after working with GI's for so long....I lose my temper constantly. :P
Missing working with the enlisted on a more regular basis. Thankfully, there's a huge neck of woods outside my house, lots of purchased watermelons, and a baseball bat. Ah, sweet relaxation. The neighbors have long since stopped listening to the swearing that switches between various languages. ;) Gotta love Missouri.

Lost-in-the-Woods, Misery (Ft. Leonardwood, Missouri) when i did 1341 school. Got any advice on what to do, where to go while i'm there?

I run an essay/thesis editing service. Due to university my availability is pretty bad and no one would hire me as I can only work two days a week. To address this, I started my own business.

Plus I get money from the government for being a student.

Plus I'm about to launch two new business lines so things are looking up.

I see that you're from California. That explains your sense of entitlement. In most of the other States we have to work to earn money or other benefits. Ever wonder why CA is having such a bad budget crisis? :|
