Good ol' Ma Deuce. Probably has the longest service life of any machine gun in history.

I believe it's been in US Military service since 1921.

I think the only gun that would come close would be the MG42/MG3

and to think the Army wants to replace it.

If it aint broke, don't fix it.

I remember reading that during a firefight in Iraq an insurgent was literally sliced in half by an M2.

You can start by not resurrecting ancient threads that obviously do not have what you're looking for. Then, you can google.

I don't think they want to replace it, It serves so well. I know they been looking a ligther .50 cal for the dismounts, but the M2 will be killing bad guys for a long time to come, in a war zone near you.

Hello kinney_bmx,

I think you misunderstand my question, which is simple and honest: how does it make any difference whether I resurrect an old (but on-topic)thread rather than start a new one to seek assistance? If anything, I would think using the old thread would show I've at least taken the effort to go through the archive, looking for what I seek, rather than possibly wasting everyone's time by asking for what could be a redundant posting? Does the resurrection somehow increase bandwidth usage or increase costs? Certaibnly there are other forums were such things are standard practice -- and if it's not appropriate here, I would just like to know...why.

I know this thread is ancient history, but as an aside.....

The Danish Madsen was first in service in 1903, and still serves with the Brazilian police. (More paramilitary than military I suppose)

The British Vickers was first used in 1912 and I think there are still quite a few kicking around in the Indian and Pakistani Army. It was used by the British until the 1970's I think, and was a reserve weapon in the South African army into the 1980's...

i agree with ya, but the concept is mass usage over time, you said it " kicking around in the Indian and Pakistani Army" now try and name a major western, eastern northern, oh hell any army that dont use the m2 or a derivative. but the ma duece for a long time to come, were as the rest will be history pieces.
