Not all of the Little Birds have the No Fear logo. I think it's just a company thing or just whoever wants it. If you look closely at many of the SOAR choppers, almost all of them have nicknames on the sides. Especially, the Darkhorse guys.

Thanks to the big boys in Washington, the 160th SOAR is getting more funding. Check out some of the upcoming upgrades.
During the next several years, U.S. Army special operations helicopters will be upgraded with modern avionics, designed to improve the capabilities of the aircraft, while making them easier to maintain, officials said.
The technology is called common avionics architecture system—or CAAS—and will be installed on special operations MH-47G Chinooks, MH-60M Black Hawks, and MH/AH-6M Little Birds cockpits. If the program goes as planned, more than 140 helicopters could be upgraded by 2010.
U.S. Special Operations Command officials said that common hardware and software in all three aircraft should reduce the logistics demands on aviation units and simplify training. The open avionics architecture also will make it easier to upgrade the aircraft with software from third-party vendors.
Most important to special operations aircrews, the CAAS will help manage cockpit workload and enhance situational awareness.

Glad to see these 500MD or MH-6 whatever they call it...
thse are pix from the unit I used to work for 'til last Dec. A friend of mine and myself (me in fat arse look...)
My friend worked as crew-chief in UH-1H and I worked as ATC...
I believe there are only two countries who operates TOW version of 500MD or M(A)H-6 for US.
Most of our 500MDs are assembled in South Korea. We operate three versions of 500MD, TOW, minigun, 2.75in rockets and recon setup. Some of the 500MD is equpipped with 4 blades tailrotor. Supposely easier to target the enemies. You need a lot of pedal work for these birds to aim...
Don't comment on me being so FAT.... Eating too much twinkies up in the tower...

First of all most of the SF on this bird or “super” airsofters then any real SF
Second of all, don’t take this the wrong way but who said anything about me not being SF or anything like that. I simply don’t go off about it like some here out of pure respect for OPSEC rules.
Ok, now I was a nachal paratrooper (as I have admitted before when asked), while that is not ranger Sf per say, it is nonetheless a very good unit in the idf.
I just finished a little over a year ago so I am sure you can imagine what combat experiences I have seen and been in (again more then that is OPSEC violations)
The army was an incredible experience. The sense of pride and service to your country is almost impossible to explain and to put down in words.
Heck as the other paratroopers (are there any?)on this board can testify to, the experience of jumping out of a plane in the army is not something you can adequately describe to someone, be it from talking to writing it here, it is simply not explainable,. The same goes for a real army experience.
Israel’s military service is three years.
I take it you were in the ROK army?!?
How long is your service?!?
Also is there a lot of combat, are just some serious tension on the border there?!?
Oh and of course I would love to hear what they said about us.

I was wondering about that myself. It could be an aux. 80 liter fuel tank on the MD-500 TOW Defender, but that would seem voulnerable to ground fire. HUGHES 500's use that nozzle (http://www.barronthomas.com/50073x2.jpg) area for the tailpipe (http://w1.270.telia.com/~u27010324/photos/mh-68.jpg). These have infrared signature suppressors mounted on engine exhausts located above the 'cone'. It's definately not a bomb, or else it also lays eggs. Superpeltor could probably find out very easily.

Dear idfm203,
I didnt' mean to offend you or any of SF group in this forum. I did NOT mean to say that way. I thought there was a lot of interest in SF but I heard not much from non-SF soldiers. That's all. Really.
As far as ROK army is concerned for enlisted soldier, it is 26 moths service, It used to be 3years but we reduced it over the years.
AirForce is longer by 3 months. Combat experience? Again I am ATC (Air Traffic Controller), I did not see any combat. Yes, we have some conflicts sometimes near DMZ... They shoot, and we shoot back, they get bad they shoot, we kill them.. No, really there has been a lot of small and big conflicts since Korean War. But nothing like what is going on in Israel. Technically speaking, war is not over, we just seized fire (for long time)
what I heard about you guys? What I heard is ver general info. Israel does require mandatory service (one of the few countries) like us. men and WOMEN has to serve (Korean women do not need to serve).
Again, I apologize if I offend you in any way.

hello He219,
That cone you describe doesn't have anything, it is simply a cover structure. IDF or ROKA version of 500MD has exaust ports on the sides. (Good reason we can't covert them into MH-6 roll... Pax will burn to death..)
one more facts,
I talked to several pilots and told me, 500MD is underpowered when you carry four TOWs. Hard to hover, you have to hover until you hit the target. Same goes for AH-1S, which carries 2.75in rockets and TOWs... Too much to hover with full ammunition.
I was wondering about that myself. It could be an aux. 80 liter fuel tank on the MD-500 TOW Defender, but that would seem voulnerable to ground fire.
I checked it. You're right it should be the 80 liter auxilliary internal fuel tank. The usual tank has a capacity of 240 liters.
Perhaps superpeltor could confirm??!!

Aircraft are being upgraded under the Mission-Enhanced Little Bird [MELB] program, The MELB provides centralized management for the research, development, procurement and fielding of special operation forces (SOF) enhanced versions of the AH/MH-6 helicopters. Upgrades include a six bladed main rotor, a canted four bladed tail rotor, a 600 shp main transmission drive system and more powerful Allison engines. To superpeltor
First of all, there is no need to apologise for you didn’t offend me. I was just pointing out what I thought was perhaps a bit wrong with your statement about my service.
I guess it is I that should apologise if I sounded rude, where you felt the need to apologise to me for I didnt mean to come off that way.
As for airsofter, I mean those people that play those military games using fake weapons. (I really don’t know much about airsoft so I apologise to those airsofters if “fake weapons” is too harsh of a word).
You can find more about airsoft in the reenactment / airsoft / paintball section on this board.
I am just curios about your training. Is your training soley done by your countryman or is the U.S. involved in that?!?
Also the border. is there a fence along the border. Is that fence electified or is it full of sensors to alert if an intruder is cutting it?!?
To He219(yeah that plane again……. )
I am happy that you can finally enjoy one of my postings…. woot
While I perhaps see you have a hypocritical attitude on politics, I also recognise that you post some good pics yourself :D .

I sent e-mail to one of the helicopter pilot, and confirnmed this matter. Aux tank for MD500 is located at aft of cabin. BUT the model he operates is MD500HF (early civilian model). He thinks defender would have aux. tank at same location. "It is such a small airframe there is no where to pu it" that's what he said.

Guys, that's the turbine. There's no other place for it and there's no room for any aux fuel tank back there. The aux tanks would be in the back of the cabin. The civilian aux tanks replaces the back passenger seats (they actually sit on the fuel tank) and I think there's a larger one that takes the seating out completely. Military probably has their own design, like the MH-60 that has walls which self-seal after bullet strikes.

The picture you posted, similar to this (http://www.barronthomas.com/50073x2.jpg) linked earlier neglects the fact that the IDF defender picture clearly shows the ported exhaust split to the overhead infrared signature suppressors and not through your pictured tailpipe. The void created is 'filled' in the IDF picture with a 'cone' protruding as referenced by AVZ. The turbine is clearly behind this feature.
Placing the aux tanks in the rear cabin makes a lot of sense in lieu of placing it next to hot exhaust pipes ported up and around it. Thanks for the clarification, Earl. :D
The person i replied to thought it might be a bomb. I don't think they realized the turbine was there at all, and I don't think they were specifically noting the altered exhaust piping. And for further clarification, you wouldn't want a bomb nestled in beside the turbine either. Thanks.
