I remember quite well. Just the chrismas day.. Fortunately the plane had to land in Marseille for refuelling !
At this time France was the only Western country to fight the Wahaby/Salafist terror.
The Americans were making friend with the Talebans, and the terrorist group used to refuge in UK or Germany.
From this time, lets not forget our Algerian and Maroccan friends. We helped each other a lot and they suffered much more than us or any Western country, even America, because of those fanatic bastards.

Btw, the terrorists planned to crash their aircraft on Paris, just like for the 9-11!
So, the GIGN and the French government did in the circumstances a very good job.

During this one the stairs to the plane moved and they had to jump to get on board, right?
And the pilot jumped out the window, down on the tarmac?

Princess Gate, or Operation Nimrod. The storming of the Iranian Embassy in London by the SAS in 1980.

How ironic, now the roles are reversed 180 degrees...

First positive comments by BlackRain about France, at least to my knowledge.
Yep, they did a pretty job, and saved a lot of life...

Actualy, after reading the story, its amazing the way every thing turned out. The pilots were exteremly luck to not be shot by freindly fire. The operation was not so smooth as planed, with that huge firefight that broke out.

So you mean France don't fight Wahaby/Salafist terror and give refuge to terrorist is it that ? what a breaking news, you are going to become rich with such an info. But I'm affraid any decent media (I'm not talking about Fox or any Murdoch's media here) would ask for some evidence you understand that ? can you share what you have with us ?

Actualy, after reading the story, its amazing the way every thing turned out. The pilots were exteremly luck to not be shot by freindly fire. The operation was not so smooth as planed, with that huge firefight that broke out.
The operation was apparently executed based on an "immediate action plan". I.e. you have one (or rather several I suppose) "main plan(s)" that you aim for carrying out in as favourable conditions to the hostage release force as possible in case the hostage takers (or terrorists if you like) can't be waited out.
Besides that you have an (or several) "immediate action plan" (or "emergency plan" if you like it that way) in case hostage release force have to act under less than optimum conditions due to sudden changes in behaviour of hostage takers.
Due to their quick reaction responsive nature carry a greater factor of unknowns and thus risk with them than "a main plan". Thus potential for "friction" in carrying out an "immediate plan" is greater.
When the terrorists suddenly started to move the plane towards the control tower of the airport it gave the hostage release force no other option.
