I think its been proven that photos 6-9 are SBS operators. They were all taken during the Taliban/Al-Qaeda uprising at Mazar E Sharif. Exactly which unit the British Special Forces operators in photos 3-5 belong to has not been proven to the best of my knowledge. They could be SAS or SBS. Photo number one certianly looks like a U.S. Special Forces patrol with a Afghan guide to me. Safe bet is that they are Green Berets. Photo number two is of a CIA operator. He was also photograghed during the Mazar E Sharif uprising. His partner Mike Spann was killed during the uprising. They were the two CIA operators questioning Taliban/Al-Qaeda prisioners ( including American John Walker ) when the uprising began.

Just out of interest the first photo was shown in a British Newspaper at the beginning of the conflict in Afghanistan and the caption read SAS patrol. When I saw it I was doubtful about whether it was the SAS and personally thought they were more likely to be American ... but then thats the media for you.

did it say where they were located when the photo was taken ??
I think pic 1 are US operators,
Pic 2 is CIA
Pic 3 maybe SAS the rucksak and the belt lets me think so.
Pic 4 and 5 could be anything (prove maybe?)
Pic 6 till 10 it is said that they are special boat section(GB),who knows the truth.

External fram bergans like that went out with the muzzle loading rifle. They're heavier, awkward, uncomfortable and you can't carry as much gear. We have a far better bergan on issue, available in both DPM and green. There are also plenty of civilian equivalents available.

In the world of backpacking external frame bergens are used with great success for rucking HUGE loads.

Not in Europe. The only thing external frames are any good for is humping things like jerrycans. I've been in the Corps long enough to know what to use, and what is used...
You guys may still use them. We don't. End of.

It seems that Bergans with frames are still around - check these from Norway- home of the Bergan!
"The military makes very strict demands on equipment. Norrøna has worked together with the military for a long time to develop solid and practical backpacks. Our designs are used by special divisions and instructors in the Norwegian army and in other NATO countries. The result is backpacks which combine durability, comfort and practical details in a way which should interest demanding outdoor lovers outside the ranks of the military. Recon Pack is today used by instructors and special divisions of the Norwegian army and other NATO countries. This backpack is designed for long marches and tough use. Para Ranger is also suitable for hunters, expedition members and others who want to take very heavy loads on demanding trips or expeditions. We believe that this is the best carrying system for heavy and cumbersome loads. The aluminium frame is not as comfortable as anatomic backpacks, but when you need to carry extremely heavy loads (30-50 kg), only a frame backpack can transfer the weight to the hips in a proper manner.
