Greetings,
For some time I´m quite interested in the Battle of the Hurtgen Forrest.
Now im planning to build an Diorama, maybe in 1/35.
So I´ve some questions on the German camo schemes used for the Volksgrenadierdivisions
And Stug III Assault Guns.
For VGD:
What Uniforms were they wearing from September 44 – November 44?
Standard Wehrmacht Field Uniforms ( without winter coat)
or “Sumpftarn” Camo Smocks,
or even the white winter Comabt Smocks?
For the Stug III
Has anybody some color schemes of the paintings used on the Stug at that time on the western front?
Here some examples of Camo I found (but I dont know whether it was used)

If you are in the US you could contact an Historical Military Gaming Society like oh say the HMGS. There you will find people that have looked over many the historical reference to match paint to correct period appearances.
Or you could contact people that build dioramas like this

The options are endless. When I used to paint miniatures, I used many different sources. You could start with Osprey books.
The best, however, is to find a local club where people who share that interest can help.
Many of the Germans in this Battle came from their Airborne forces.

You can paint your Volksgrenadiers in either feldgrau or (Zeltbahn) splittermuster 31, the two sumpfmuster (tan/water and marsh) or white for the padded winter uniforms...
Dragon produces a nice set of 1/35 volksgrenadiers...

...and Tristar has two sets of tank riders in the appropriate uniforms...

As Mark Sman said...head over to a dedicated modelling forum like Armorama. It's a good forum that has a big following and modellers that are both beginners and pro's...so you won't feel like an idiot or upset the local crowd when you post possibly newbie questions... :D

Volksgrenadier
272d Volksgrenadier Div
Hürtgenwald, 1944
The 272d Infantry Division was essentially destroyed in France during the collapse of August '44. By November, it had been resurrected as the 272d Volksgrenadier Division and was back in action in the Hürtgen Forest. This grenadier has been recently reuniformed and reequipped with a new look, the "M44" uniform, and a new weapon, the "MP-44" which was the first assault rifle. The helmet, known as the "M42", is the final WWII style and lacks decals and the traditional rolled rim.

Hey howdy hey!
I know a man here in Kentucky who fought through that battle. His son is a Christain Teacher I study under. http://www.lifeonthehill.org
Next time I see or talk with him I will ask if he remebers anything in regard to your question.
Also, HBO did a movie called When Trumpets Fade. It is about these battles and may have some references sited in the credits that would be of use. I just found this movie in the $5.50 bin at Wal-Mart.
Jesus blessings!

Here is a stunning photo of an extremely well armed troop in the infamous Hurtgen forest December 1944.

That is an MG-34. Judging by the tri-color on the helmet, the picture was probably taken in 1939-1941.
When Trumpets Fade is a terrible movie. Little plot and bad acting........
