I've heard a lot of horror stories about computers not starting up after insalling SP2, then having to be reformatted. I've also seen list of programs that would not functiuon correctly with SP2. Other people I have talked to say the security improvements aren't that significant.

I've been avoiding it. It's kind of a decision about whether the risk is worth the reward, and for me, it isn't.

Same here, im not in the mood reinstalling everything if it mess's up. Funny that when my pc is perfect (right now) i look for things to change, things which i regret when it ****s up.

I uninstalled in order to get my new 6600GT card to work. Don't know if I'm gonna install it again. Not really a must-have IMO...

Really stupid and simple...This card needs to have an extra power supply, you need to connect it to the power unit. Somehow I had gotten it into my head that only the 6800 cards needs this. When people asked me if I had connected it I said, no, the 6600 card doesn't need that.
Since none of those people had a 6600GT card, no-one could convince me otherwise but I checked the manual just to be on the safe side and it didn't mention this at all. It was only late last night I was surfing the Nvidia forums, I read this:

well i had that problem, all u have to do is plug in the power box cable in back of the card. it is hard to see it, but u will find it at the back. GOOD LUCK.

Yup that solve most of peoples system freeze (something XFX doesn't tell you to do in the manual).
:cantbeli:
After that I just had toy around with some different drivers for the card and now everything is running like a dream...

If your XP is an illegal copy, I'd think twice before installing it. If heard bad stories from ppl that have pirated XP and SP2...

My XP is legal and SP2 has worked fine.

Windows firewall with SP2 sucks ass I went and bought McAfee's Internet Security Suite for $50 and that firewall is much much better.

I downloaded and installed SP2 without any problems. But I have no idea what difference there is.

Regarding buying stuff which doesn't work... I bought some extra RAM for my laptop from PCWorld. I should have known better from previous problems with them. The RAM crashed my PC, resulting in a full reformat, and losing alot of my work. :(

When I returned the RAM, I was told it only worked half of the time in HP laptops !!! And their techie couldn't warn me before ?!! :fork:

Don't bother with SP2, it's not that significant to have. If you have a firewall and Virus scanner. Then you're set. Because that's really the only **** that SP2 provides, and ends up busting every program ever made anyways. I only have SP2 partially installed, but not the entire thing. And I believe I'll never get the full version, even though I do have it on disc right now, and it's currently staring me in the face. :|

Good choice. If you wait a year or so to install it, I believe it should be at a better build by then and safe to install. But for now, it's good to just leave it. But there is always a way you can take an older computer, reformat it then install SP2 on it, it should work right away due to very little of programs installed on it. Then when you add on the programs later on it will continue to work great. But installing it when you have many programs may cause the lot of them to half ass function. ;)

I haven't got it installed, did for a while but certain things didn't work so good so i installed it.

On the other, everyone i've heard from / know who's installed from a fresh install (ie. HD format and new install of XP) has had no problems with it.

So happens i'm about to do a fresh install of XP and will be installing SP2 so i'll let ya know how it goes if this threads still active then.

I know bugger all about computers and only started using XP about a month ago, I also bought a new copy of Norton antivirus 2005 and for the life of me can't get it working. I can't help wondering if it's because I've installed SP2.

As I explained above. First test on an older computer if you have one and do a fresh install on that. Fresh install is much better with sp2 than adding it to current stuff you have. Thats why many programs may stop working, but if you add the programs with SP2 already installed, there shall be no problems.

Not necessarily a SP2 problem. Lots of people had problems with getting Norton Antivirus to work in the past, and personally I binned it as well after it ****ed up 3 of my Windows installations.
