Armoured Dove,
Do you remember a Palestinian sniper attack on an Isreali guard/border post a couple of years ago that killed 9 soldiers?
Well, i used to work with asylum seekers (illegal immigrants and criminals mostly) and a Palestinian guy (there are loads of Palestinian asylum seekers here, the govt won't send any of them back, just lets them hang around without status) told me that the soldiers were all killed with a 1930's Lee Enfield rifle (like the ones the Brits used in WW2). He claimed to know this because he had called home and everyone was boasting about it!!! Bull**** is my opinion. I was wandering what you knew about it and whether there was any evidence about this?
BTW, the same guy told me that he wanted to leave Britain to go home and 'kill jews'. No ****. Of course, he is still here and still collecting thousands of pound of benefits!

Well, for the checkpoint incident:
Daily newspaper claimed the rifle was M1 Carbine, but later it was founded that they were serveral types of rounds. The estimation today, AFAIK, is that the snipers used M14 rifle and some sort of automatic light machine gun from two different posts. Another sepculation that I heard is that the sniper wasn't Palestinian but a foreign mercenary.

As far as i know, the gun used was an old russian mosin-nagant. the M1 carbine was left behind to confuse the investigators, but it took short time to understand that. the sniper did used a single shooting position, but the echo from the walls of the canyon where the post was placed returned and confused the soldiers - they actually opened fire at the oposite direction, thus exposing their backs to the sniper's fire.
IMHO this was a lethal mix of professional (or plain lucky) palestinian work and don't-give-a-**** soldiers who paid dearly for previous major ****-ups. the isaelt press blamed higher commanders for the resposinility - altough they do share some of the blame, it does not take away the soldeirs own fault.

He could probsbly an import (the man, not the gun). It is no secret that Palestinian used the service of merceneries, mainly from the IRA, the Chechnian restitance, Hizbullah and even Al-Qaeda.
As for the gun, the barrel cover reminds me some sort of M16 variant, it could be probably a toy or a mock gun.
