By BILL KACZOR, Associated Press Writer

PENSACOLA, Fla. - Two National Guard soldiers who married Iraqi women against their commander's wishes will have to wait at least eight months to return home with their brides, according to a lawyer for one of the soldiers.

The women's visas will take at least that long to process by mail because the State Department is not issuing visas in Iraq (news - web sites), said Richard Alvoid, an attorney hired by Sgt. Sean Blackwell's family.

The wait could be even longer if the military decides to charge the men with disobeying orders, Alvoid said.

Blackwell, 27, and Cpl. Brett Dagen, 37, were Christians who converted to Islam so they could be married under Iraqi law. Their commanders took the unusual step of ordering the men not to marry.

The soldiers, members of the 3rd Battalion of the Florida Guard's 124th Infantry, are expected to remain in Iraq at least until February. The men had wanted to send their wives, both physicians, to the United States sooner because of threats from anti-American Iraqis.

The men have been restricted to their bases since the double wedding in August, and they have not been allowed to see or speak to their wives since then, the soldiers' mothers said Monday.

Capt. Jason Beck, a spokesman for the 3rd Battalion of the Florida Guard's 124th Infantry, did not return a call seeking comment Monday.

Alvoid said he has received word from the Judge Advocate General's Office that charges have not been filed but the soldiers were under investigation.

Lt. Col. Ron Tittle, spokesman for the Florida National Guard in St. Augustine, said earlier this month that the soldiers' battalion commander had been worried the marriages might distract his troops from their mission and compromise their safety.

I was actually just about to post something about this... I'm curious what everyone thinks about it.

I can understand why they're CO wouldn't want them to get married. They ARE deployed to a combat zone. They shouldn't have disobeyed their CO's order. But I can see where they are coming from too.

Seems like a pretty messy situation to me...

A 27 year old Sgt. and 37 year old Cpl.? Is this out of the ordinary for the National Gaurd? I know there are alot of cases with enlistments that are not right out of high school or a few years of college but I have no real knowledge of the National Gaurd.

wud be a big joke if the military pressed charges against them..i mean..just imagine the headlines..

didn't this happen recently with South Korean deployments?

...
10-20-2003, 08:42 PM
It has probably happened with every single deployment since the Roman Legions. I don't think the issue is so much they got married it is if they disobeyed orders.

Hey, watch your language, boys. You make it sound like these women are naive little maidens who were thrown over their shoulders and dragged off to get married. In case you missed this part... they're both doctors. Smart women who I'm sure knew what they were getting into. Not "trophies."

Whew... sorry about that. Rant over.

I think its outrageous and they should be allowed to get married and go back to the USA with them immediately; If I were in their shoes I couldn't care less because if I were American(And I will be oneday!) Would I prefer an American or an Iraqi? AMERICAN!

You ARE an American, unless you are an illegal alien, in which then I would have to shoot you

Not necessarily. Judging from the location he put, he could have a student visa.

I like Nawlins' attitude unlike the Vance; She is somewhat correct; My fathers studying in USA and I "came along" (http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/services/tempbenefits/StudVisas.htm) - So far we've been here 6 years; I got my HS Diploma, and pissed off because I cant get a job/join Army becuase I don't have a Green Card/Permanent Residence (http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/services/residency/index.htm)

So you are a visitor, your status is lot like foreign students or tourists. Common sense tells me that they don't let visitor/tourists/exchange students have green cards otherwise USA is going to double its population in a year.

Imagine if I take a trip to a country in Europe and I demand "Hey, I want to live here in your country. Do you have a problem with that?"

The two American servicemen married two Iraqis women are just plain 0 retarded. My brother married a Vietnamese girl and it took him two years to sponsor her to move to America. Why should the two American servicemen have special treatment? They should have wait a little bit longer if the already know the consequences.

100% Correct; I'm not implying they should give visitors green cards; I was just expressing how pissed off I was; And if you didn't know, US is giving away 55,000 FREE Green Cards to anyone in the world via a "Diversity Visa Lottery" (http://www.immigration.gov/graphics/services/residency/divvisa.htm) wahts the catch? Like any lottery, not everyone gets it, but unlike a lottery, there are 55,000 winners! last year about 150 malaysians won; My unfortunate ass tried 6 times for 6 years so far and NOTHING yet----

Right or wrong disobeying orders is disobeying orders. It does not matter if you think it is right or wrong.

is ti really all that surprising that out of half a million odd US soldiers there, one or two might fall in love with and marry an Iraqi chick .. not really. Plus, if the chicks a doctor a who's been educated outside Iraq chances are she's not just doing for the VISA.

Another point, a number of US citizens who posted in this forum need to check out the US immigration law.
