No lMG 36 ever existed in the Bw. The version´s used in the different units were just ordanary G36 outfitted with the C-Mag and a bipod, nothing more! As far as I know, there was not even one "real" lMG 36 (=thicker barrel) issued to any unit.

The Dingo that hit a mine... was anyone injured? Did the design function as intended?
In short: no and yes

somehow funny... people are checking the web for ever to find new(!) pics of their favourite SF unit and the only thing you need to do is buying a weekly magazine and take a look. Stern had quite a few KSK reports as far as i know with quite exclusive pics. The stories are another thing. One has to be careful what is just sensational talk and what's real.

Where does the germany army has keeping peace area?
the KSK operations and ISAF are two very different things. KSK (shown in the pics) are no peacekeepers. They are in much lower numbers and do joint ops with other sf, somehow classiefied but with a little fantasy everybody knows. The Bundeswehr in general of course operates in afghanistan as peacekeeping force.

My guess:
Luchs is a reconnaissance vehicle, lightly armored and armed only for self-defense (if a Luchs has to open fire it means it has botched its mission, i.e. been spotted by the enemy).
A Wiesel MK has the same armament (20mm cannon) but is smaller and lighter meaning both a smaller target and much easier to handle logistics-wise.

Mhh yes maybe they think Luchs is needless because Wiesel. I read some time ago that 7th German tank division leaved to Bosnia-Herzegowina, Kosovo and Afghanistan. Anyone knows which tanks they displaced to Afghanistan? Do they now have Leopard 2 or Marder in Afghanistan or why did they send them to Afghanistan?

No, they arn´t FschSpezZg. They are from one of the combat Co´s.
And by the way, the FschSpezZg is not "only" a Recce Platoon. They should be some sort of, let´s say "SOF light". More or less some sort of german Version of the frensh CRP´s or the british Pathfinder Platoon.

Belgian AH-64 with German CH-53? Is this the temporary solution for CH-53 air safeguard? They should hurry up with their Tiger training. :D
And another question why do they only fly CH-53 in Afghanistan and not UH-1D for example? I think this machines have problems with gear and Afghan dust. I read that they upgraded CH-53 with dust filter additional.

That is one reason. The other is, that it is too high for our UH-1D´s. If they would be able to lift off, they would only carry it´s own crew and nothing else, so ist would be senseless to use them!

And what's with NH90? Is this heli already in use? Or do they still test the chopper? They should better replace CH-53 with a newer, bigger transport chopper instead of NH90 for UH-1D. That would be more sensefull for new transport tasks of the future.

And, btw, this (http://people.freenet.de/graf.von.zahl/ma4.JPG) is what I call a gear whore - I mean, everything expect for his body armor and the BDU bottoms looks as if it was purchased privately.

The webspace belongs to "Graf-von-Zahl". You know him from se.de?
If I remember correctly he has good connection to FschJg and espcially to the Spezialzüge (don't know if he is a para himself though).

Why kidding?
Soldiers from the KSK returned to Afghanistan this spring, but little to nothing is known about their missions there, just like their earlier deployment that started in 2001.

GREAT PICS! I saw a lot of men outside without helmets on and I'm curious as to why. In the US military even if we don't have kevlar on you usually are required to have some type of cover on.
In garrison, perhaps.

what kind of Schutzweste are they using?
Most are using the standard body armor (the one in flecktarn camo pattern) made by Mehler (link (http://www.mehlervariosystem.de/uk/pdf/pdfstatisch/S813-758.pdf)), some wear the older, british made "Bristol" vest in DPM pattern. In the newer pictures up in the thread, soldiers also wear the new "IdZ" (future infantryman) body armor.
I didn't see any american vests though (and to my knoledge, there are none in use in the Bundeswehr), no idea what caleb is talking about.

The model that you've got is the one that was originally developed during the cold war era and is merely a flak jacket to protect against splinters - used only during training in Germany. If you go on a mission aborad, you get the proper Mehler bullet proof vests.
Another model of this vest is issued to KSK and some DSO units:

how good are the german kevlar vests?
They offer the usual protection - German Schutzklasse 1 (NIJ lvl. IIIA) protection from the kevlar, plus SK 4 (NIJ lvl. IV) hard armor plates in the front and back.
Hi Zerodivider,
What the name of this vest?
Thanks
It's called "Schutzweste Spezialkräfte" (armor vest, special forces), you can read the procurement specifications (in German) here (http://daten.bwb.org/AG-Bund/TL/daten/84700068_3.pdf).

Well...
The thing is, he's combining insignia of different branches!
If he's air force, he shouldn't have a beret (in the German air force only airfield security troops have berets).
If he's army, there shouldn't be small wings on his shoulder straps.
I'm sure there's some reason for this combination and I'd like to know it.

The same "happend" to my buddy.
Actually he's a Combat Medic of the AF, but because he's a
Medic, and "work" in a Army Barrack he got this nice lookin "Pizzabäcker Ding"

to wich kind of troops does this insignia on that tpz fuchs belong to? and why there isnt the typical ordinal structure on it like (just for example) 2. (company) - Insignia (e.g. mechanized infantry)- 99. (bataillon or next higher unit)? what i see there looks like "klk", but that cant be right. the klk (former kommando luftbewegliche kräfte) doesnt exist anymore.

maybe because the same reason they went there only with flecktarn vests instead of wüstentarn...not as well prepared...or because the new locations are more in the mountain region (Kunduz& Mazar-i-Sharif) where they also wear flecktarn...

No no no, it isn´t the problem that our armed forces do not have the equipment. The problem ist that some dumb politicans think that it looks more peaceful to be in clothes that doesn´t fit in the countries environment, like "Flecktarn" in Afghanistan. The later contingents got "Tropentarn".
But the brainsickness stays; It isn´t allowed to our first soldiers who went to Kongo (50 men) to CARRY their weapons, they are Soldiers without weapons! It´s unbeliveable, but that´s "Bundeswehr".

I've heard something completely different...
People there recognize the olive vehicles as German, same with
the uniform. Vehicles painted in desert camo and soldiers
dressed in desert pattern they recognize them as american.
People there, I've heard don't like the US. Troops so they
start shootin' ('n **** like this) them.
(This story was told by an Army Medic.)
But long time ago, German troopers got the "Wuestentarn". Just a few vehicles get a desert camo.
last but not least German troops there, also get in trouble.

I wasn't able to record it, but it was a pretty good one imo.
I feared they would bash the soldiers again, but they let them talk most of the time. Lots of information on what german soldiers (or soldiers in general) have to deal with after they're home from e.g. afghanistan.

This is the first time I checked out this thread, like the Dutch thread,"awsome". As for the female wearing jewlery and I'm assuming you mean tease? You should have seen some of the Canadian females in Khandahar (I mean the good looking ones) they either dressed...well you know what I mean. I've seen half of it. IIRC the one had traumatic experiences of a mine clearing accident. Also some were affected aftermath of IED. For a person it doesn't really matter how this trauma happened. Some put it away, some not. Fighting is another stress level of course, no doubt, but Traumas are single events and they can happen without fighting. So i think combat stress is not the same as a single event trauma, but both can lead to equally bad symptoms. Someone could correct me if i'm wrong.
I don't think the symptoms are worse, comparing the events. It is rather depending on the person.

Yeah there is no reason to b*tch at those who have "acquired" PTSS over there, it could happen to the best soldiers..
Let's just hope that Defence will take good care of them by the means of psychological help so they recover, that could prevent some incidents like the U.S. has had, with Marines shooting civilians at a gas-station in order to get "suicide-by-cop".
Those with PTSS don't deserve to be disrespected, they deserve proper care. So keep your "it would have been worse if they had actually fought" comments in your mouth. You wouldn't be too happy if you have seen your best friend lose his arm or leg, because of an IED, either.

Not disrespecting the soldiers with PTSS... seeing blown up kids or watching somebody die pushes all the wrong buttons in the human psyche... was just wishing that German politics would allow a wider use of the Bundeswehr in overseas missions.
Really wonder if the Bundeswehr has the heart for it after seeing some of the interviews, especially the officers.
Also found the tone of the report a bit kid-gloved. I follow the German press closely and every time there is the suggestion of increased danger in Afghanistan (or God forbid a mission which might involve shooting) the calls for the troops to come home multiply at all political levels.
I know it is the WWII legacy, but it does get old.

Germany is new to oversea deployments so let the people get used to it.
PTSS is new to the Germans, not so to the Americans. Let things settle a bit and everything will be fine.

Thats simpy not true. Show me where there was a call "multiply at all political levels" to bring the troops back. You are simply talking out of your ass, sorry.

Believe it or not, it happens, and not just in a handful of events. Just because you don't read about it in the news doesn't mean there is nothing happening.

Miss the recent Bundestag debate? Mission extended, but plenty of doubters.
Perhaps they are doing more fighting than I am aware of... it's pretty impossible to follow their mission scope from here... as we certainly aren't hearing about it in the press unless they are desecrating graves and posing with dead bodies. I personally doubt the mission would "survive" a rash of casualties involved from fighting. Political support for the mission would fall apart quickly.

So now its just "plenty of doubters" instead of "multiply at all political levels"... ?
In the Bundestags there have been 436 votes for the extend of "Enduring Freedom" and 101 against it. And that was for the "Enduring Freedom"-Mandate under which the combat-deplyoment of the KSK are made, not even the ISAF-Mandate.

There was more debate than the final vote reflects within CDU and SPD and you know that. This much debate even though the Bundeswehr hasn't seen any combat beyond responding to IEDs and convoy attacks, dodging occasional rocket and mortar attacks on the base etc. Not dissing the troops, but they are hardly as actively involved in combating the Taliban as the US, Canadians, English or Dutch. If you've got better sources than me on Bundeswehr missions and activities that express something to the contrary, I'd be happy to hear about them.
I defer my argument until a few casualties do roll in. Let's see how much the support the mission has then. I'm really interested if the German government has the stomach to take on increased international responsibility. Bin mehr als skeptisch.

I did. They mainly named the issue. Showed soldiers that were wounded by IED attacks or of soldiers that weren't able to cope with the many severly wounded and dead.
It wasn't the best documentary, frankly said. They failed to show the other side of the medal.
Actually one soldier said that he will refuse from now on to go abroad because he experienced so many bad things. Who does he think he is? Does he really think he can decide where he goes and where not? He is a soldier. Others decide where he's being sent. This guy really made me mad throughout the whole documentary.

The Dutch lost 3 men, the Danes also 3. Germany lost 18 men and they didnt shoot each other while taking a dump. May all KIAs rest in peace.
If you have no clue about whats going on, stop thinking about what could go on.

Well you can. Its possible to refuse. I know a guy, he volunteered to stay longer as the 9 months draft and they wanted to send him to Bosnia. He refused and stayed at home.

As I wrote before I think it is an interesting docu. Maybe some viewers learned something about the Bundeswehr they didn't know before.
The soldier that refused to go abroad was the first german soldier severely wounded abroad after WW2 right?
He didn't see a mine and stepped on it and now his left foot is crippled. If he had gone abroad after the accident when he had the chance he would have had to sent other soldiers to clean mines. I think that is what stops him.
But I understand you as well. Being sent to places where noone wants to go is also a part of being a soldier.

"Enduring Freedom" is the Mandate for (besides others) our SF in Afghanistan which can/was/is deployed all over Afghanistan. Although the KSK was "discredited" just before the vote (Alleged POW abuse, ""Nazi""-Era Symbols on Jeeps.) the results were still good.

I guess after 60 years of thorough indoctrination, any military aspirations have been effectively purged from our society. That's the result you get when you try to "keep the Germans down".....:D
On a more serious note, do any of my fellow Germans have the exact text of the mandate for Enduring Freedom? Would be interesting to see whether there is a geographical limitation with respect to deployment within Afghanistan.

Question: what is that thing on the (from our view) right side of the 20mm? Some sort of optical device? Is it an uograde? IIRC, the Wiesels did not have that thing some years ago.
Thx.

On another note cause I'm not up to date: are there Marders in A-Stan now, if yes, how many. How do they perform there?

Now dont you guys confuse me. I was on deployment with a Fallschrimjäger company and know how a Wiesel 1 TOW looks like. That's clearly an MK20 version fitted with some, some... I don't know... some fancy extra stuff. But WHAT is it?

That is the new weapon sight for the MK 20mm, called "AOZ 2000" (autonomes optronisches Zielgerät, stand-alone optronic targeting unit), it includes a daylight CCD camera, a thermal sight and a laser rangefinder.

Yes, if you translate it literally it means Fog-throwing-device.

Hi,
I'm looking for photos of a German armored Mercedes G-Wagon (Wolf SSA) in desert camouflage used for the German ISAF contingent in Afghanistan. I've seen some pictures in TV.
Until now I only know only the olive variant of the Wolf SSA:

Does anyone have photos?
