Looted Iraqi Air Force jet fighters lie in the desert outside the July Air Force Base near Falluja, northwest of Baghdad Saturday Oct. 18, 2003. The planes were moved by the airforce before the war, but are now being stripped by looters who sell the aircrafts' aluminium for 500 dinars (US 25 cents) per kilogram. The aircraft are a Russian made Mig-29, right, Mig-23, left, and a Mig-21 at rear. (AP Photo/Greg Baker)

I think that A/c in the background is a Sukhoi 15/17/22 Fitter,and not a Mig 21.
The mig 21 series don't have tapered noses,if I remeber correctly?

Not sure.

Don't forget - it was looted

Looted or not KP that a/c has a distinct taper to the nose of the A/c,I'll lokk into this,my feelings are that it's an Su.

I stand corrected, looking closer at other pics of Mig 21's this looks like a later version.
The demarcation lines for the cammo, gives it a much severe taper than the other pics I have!!! ;)

I don't discuss this man. Actually i can't because i don't have pictures of both to compare. So let me agree with you just because for me Mig-29 is more interesting - it is only really modern aircraft on this picture.

What is interesting is that during GW 1 ,the Iraqi AF,reportedly flew all their remaining Mig29's to Iran for protection!
So I wonder if this was one that suffered damage previously.
Also the fact that these a/c are out in the open, and not hidden away,AFAIK there were NO flights whatsoever made by the IAF during the last war...which is amazing to say the least!!

i think these were buried in the ground as you can see the piles of dirt around the aircraft.

What do you get moneywise by looting planes?

the frame isn't worth much but all the avionics are worth lots of money.

No its a honest statement,I never considered they were buried!!

Like I said,i was under the impression that all the Mig29's that remained flew to Iran.

Even if they were buried,I don't think thay would have been for 12 years!!

I recalled Iran kept the Mig-29s and never returned them. The jets they found buried were Mig-25. (not sure if other types were found)

you didn't hear the recent news about the buried aircraft? they were in the middle of the desert. the only reason why people knew they were there was because they saw the horizontal stabilizers were sticking out of the sand. it's really significant because it is an explanation of why we are not finding WMDs but only the programs to produce.

No I heard about them, but like I said,I was under the impression that they flew ALL their airworthy Mig 29's to Iran,so that doesn't explain this one!
