Until you can damn shave while looking in it.

You could just ask your brother.

But I think its all dependant on what you plan on doing with the boot. I mean I have boots that I wear in garrison that are very shiney and then those I wear in the field which are beat to hell.

Shining your boots is like having ***, you can never get enough of it.

I hope to God you are not just polishing the toe cap of your boots. Don't be lazy, if you are going to actually spit shine them do the whole boot. Don't look like a bag of ass, take pride in your personal appearance.

I have never understood the "sexiness" in polishing your boots to
the extent where it resembles a fettish, it seems a bit silly to me

Take care of your boots in practical way don't polish them till they die, keep them smooth and functional.

In my opinion "mirror" polished boots don't serve any purpose, if you go on parade an 5 extra min. should be enough to give your boots a slight glossy shine. No more.

Spit shining is for soldiers going on parade and base rats.. You don't spit shine your combat bootsthat you use in the field. But rather give them a good dose of wax to keep the skin smooth and soft! A must when out on patrol.. ;)

Amen.

Parade boots: Whatever the RSM (or yank equivalent) says! Don't make life harder than it needs to be!

Field boots: Too much polish kills leather, it makes it crack and die. Get a decent pair of goretex boots (Lowa's or Matterhorns etc) and use wax. Wax is much more protecting and will let your boots last longer. It's also better in the cold (tip from a Swedish Army bloke met whilst hiking in the Arctic Circle)

IMHO: Bulled boots look **** with DPM/BDU. Makes you look like some desk-driving loser who hasn't any proper training to do. Just polish them so there's no dirt/scuffs, and maybe give 'em a shine for a parade.

us army standards are outlined in AR 670-1. do a google search for that.

the general rule of thumb is:

combat boots ~ keep the leather soft, clean, and dry, boot wax and a buffing brush do the trick. keep was in those seems and cracks..thats what helps them stay weather proof

boots for garrison~ uniform high gloss of the entire boot, Jump boots are traditionaly only shined at the toe and heel because of the type of leather used.. the standard still calls for the whole boot to be shined but don't sweat it .. it is generally accepted. don't let these guys tell you to do the minimum... attention to detail and going all the way are what soldiers are called to do, even when it comes to the uniform. if you are polishing boots that look like crap half way through the day and most of the time you think no one notices... try stopping. some one will ask you what happened. any moron can meet the standard.. setting the standard takes effort.

82nd all the way!
