Six Indian security personnel have been injured in a clash with suspected militants in Indian-administered Kashmir, police say.
The exchange of fire occurred at a complex of buildings in Srinagar, the area's summer capital.
Indian authorities said two heavily armed militants hurling grenades stormed a passport office.
The stand-off was continuing as security forces from a neighbouring barracks surrounded the scene.
Part of the complex, which has been built around a sports stadium, has been requisitioned by India's central reserve police force.
But a police spokesman said the attackers had not reached the barracks.
"The battle is still going on," the spokesman said.
The stadium is due to be used for a Republic Day parade on 26 January, and security had been beefed up in the area.
The Al Mansurin militant group claimed responsibility for the attack.
