View Full Version : Militaryphotos Chat Online
Caving under extreme pressure from the off-topic (aka, the back alley) section of this board, I setup a makeshift online chat app. I'll use this space to disclaim any shred of usefulness, possibility of it working for more than 20 minutes, or the fact that the people on this board are even remotely pleasant in a realtime chat environment. If it breaks, see the above disclaimer.
You have to setup a new account on the front page which isn't tied to the logins here, and there's still no email verification. Don't be upset if from some horrible coffee spilling accident, the whole user database gets wiped out. Not promising anything with this thing and some of the features on there probably won't work.

Why can't we have a Milphotos IRC channel? that would simplify everything, and people can use mIRC to chat. as far as i've seen, MIRC can work well even under the worst net traffic conditions (the kind of traffic that renders IE useless).
Well, there's always that option, but seeing as the most traffic to this site happens during the lunch time hours in the US, it's probably safe to assume that lots of people are hitting this from work. Most work firewalls block IRC traffic which would block your solution. The above solution works with any browser and doesn't need any software to install. I'll add a poll to this topic though so people can vote on what they want.

What about something like that, didn't tested b/c demo server doesn't seem to work(downloading for home tests) but it sounds promising for me:
Features
* fully distributed, scalable system utilizing the Java Message Service
* HTTP tunneling support for connecting through firewalls
* stable, reliable server
* applet runs in all of the java-capable browsers
* pure java. the server runs on any java 2 capable platform
* LGPL license
* easy integration with your existing web site/web app
* developed using good object-oriented principles
Looks interesting, I'll have a look...
Ok I had a look at the NFC thing. Although it's neat, it too needs to use special ports to connect to the server and/or usage of a separate tomcat style server side engine. Both of these require alternate ports from 80 which would block some people. IRC would be better over something like this if that was voted in as it would allow a broader range of clients.

I like this idea too. I hope it will work
I like your avatar, hood. It is a bit cute...
The chat is fine, the problem is nobody is there at the same time..
A good idea is to advertise it better on the site, a direct link on the front site..
