You mean people jerking off to bush and the stars and stripes? I think its not something typically american but rather something that all big countries/ superpowers need. Think? Have there ever existed a big superpower without a big guy representing and holding it together? Its hard otherwise to keep so large groups of people loyal to one political line. You need to be something exceptional to be a leader in this cind of states. So I dont blame them trying to do the same thing with bush, especially in insecure times of war and dead GI:s,

Just a question, but do any of you guys over the pond think there's too much faff surrounding the president/presidency? After all, it is a republic, he's not an emperor or a monarch. Just wondering.

For example, when emper...I mean Prime Minister Blair won his second term as PM, all he did was give a quick speach outside No. 10, wave a bit and then went in for a cup of tea.
I know TB isn't the head of state, but the President is still an elected representative. When the Queen dies, no doubt there be a big ceremony as we get Charles III (or George VII, he might change his name), but that doesn't happen often and it's all a throw back to when the 'great unwashed' were a lot more uninformed thatn they are now and really thought the monarch was a divine ruler. Plus the monarch doesn't really have any power now so it doesn't mean much anyway.
Do you not think it's a bit odd to treat an elected representative the same as a monarch/emperor etc? (might go to his head) After all, they are no better than you or I, that's the whole point.

It's not like the masses are bowing in front of our illustrious leader under divine servitude ..
I see a public ceremony for our Commander in Chief, a 21 gun salute and a parade. What's the big deal? 76 Trombones at the big parade!

I for one would feel alot better about myself if Bush just gave a wave outside the White House instead of this dog and pony show, especially with everything thats going on right now. Personally I think its obscene.

It just seems to be making a man out to be more than he is. I suppose I just don't like people lording it about. I'm not a fan of pomp and ceremony (apart from rememberance services, they deserve it), especially for someone who is still alive and with a job yet to do.
I'm not suggesting you guys see him as a deity! Just think it's a bit too much. Probably just me being a typical understated brit/canuck!

The cost wasn't as much as people make it out to be. The swearing-in ceremony only cost $1 Million. The cost for the security was footed by the city of DC out of funds previous given to them by Congress for- guess what- improved security. ;)
The parties and functions afterwards are all privately funded. Now, perhaps the American people could have donated to a different cause, but it's their money and they have a right to spend it how they wish.

Yeah there are alot of Bush bashers and people saying the money for the inauguration should have gone towards other things, but the inauguration is part of American history. Since George Washington in 1789, I believe, to 2005 there has always been an inauguration for a president. Its a 200 hundred year old tradition and it will continue for hundreds of MORE years. So get over it, hope the Bush daughters get drunk and make out, and prepare for four more years.

How educated are the protesters? Most of the intellectuals and universities are against the war. Uneducated intellectuals and uneducated members of universities of course. ;)

Dont forget the intellectually stimulating squatter punks and assorted other bastions of society with green hair, liberty spikes and assorted body piercings. Certainly there are a good deal of educated people against the war but there are more than a few "professional" protestors involved as well who are against any cause coming down the pike as long as they get to practice some ANN-ER-Ky (man) , its more a social thing than really standing for (or against) anything.

If we all do the math correctly, the so-called Hippie generation is now in their late middle ages and are people who are, obviously, very liberal. Who's running public and, especially, private universities today? That same generation. We have former hippies running the higher education of America today. I'm not saying that's bad, military academies are a different breed, but let's not forget the obvious as to why most protesters are college students or their peers.

I was also disappointed by the military parade, way to thin for my taste, I thought it would be more of a russian style parade, with every division and weapon of the arsenal coming down the avenue
That would have been great. Thousands of men following a couple hundred bradleys and abrams. 50 apaches slowly moving above, while f22's and then f15s fly at a relativly low level above. At a higher level a few hundred b1's and b52s. The shadows castings their impression on the ground below. Ah, I do love the symbolism and illustration of the might and strength of our people.
(i even enjoy that of other people, i guess im a sucker for that sort of stuff - its just so iconic)

Three protesters sit locked to gasoline pumps with bicycle locks, awaiting arrest during a protest in Portland, Ore., Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005. At least 2,000 activists marched through downtown Portland, to protest President Bush's inauguration, the Iraq war and the administration's economic and social policies. Police said that from 11 to 15 people were arrested during the day, most of them at the gas station.

95% of the festivites was paid for privately. THe other 5% was paid fort he by DC's federal grants. Weasel, I beleive they call one being against burning a flag standing up for a cause you believe in. When a protestor burns a flag they dont look at as a peice of cloth but they see it as a symbol. Most americans see it as a symbol millions have died for. If you dont give a **** that so many have died for what that flag stands for then you are " a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than yourself." According to your logic it is ok to burn a cross as well.

Sgt. 1st Class Jeff Due, right, a U.S. Army recruiter, is surrounded by protesters at Seattle Central Community College, Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005, in Seattle. After about a 10-minute standoff during which protesters tore up U.S Army literature, the protesters were successful in getting Due and another recruiter to leave their table under escort by campus security officers. Several hundred students walked out of classes at several Seattle colleges and universities to protest the inauguration of President Bush

why dont you stop posting so much negative crap on this site or go back to your mirror
The negative crap will stop the moment the terms of use for this site are changed so that dissent/criticism of US actions abroad will not be tolerated anymore. Maybe a few hard-core political trolls would keep on going with "guerilla action" via proxies, but after a while most of us probably would quit posting. Would you be happy with that? You'd have your all-American/coalition-of-the-willing-friendly site all for yourselves.
"We" post "crap" about certain US foreign policies because we feel strongly about it. We would like nothing better than to see the jolly giant back - the USA who we could trust, the ally we could reason with, the friend who would not set us up with ultimatums like "you're either with us or against us" and demand that we should take part in crusades we don't believe in - we just don't know how to deal with this incredibly powerful troglodyte fueled by fear, apocalyptic visions of the religious right and unquestioning belief in the New American Century. I am sorry if it offends you, but that's the way I and many other people I know see it.
You speak of a mirror? We, the rest of the world, are YOUR mirror. Don't like what you see? Maybe you should check up on your government's actions on a media owned by someone else than Rupert Murdoch, tolerate our "crap" on this site and try to understand why we project this particular image back to to you.
