The most significant feature of AN-94 is the variable automatic mode, which switches from the 1,800 rpm to a 600-rpm rate.
High rate of fire of the submachine gun is achieved thanks to the following:
Short travel of bolt carrier; return travel of bolt carrier is accelerated by the spring of the shock absorber located at the rear of receiver.
Construction of an integrated carrier-stock features a buffer (located above the foregrip inside the stock), which assists the return spring by giving an extra impulse and accelerates the firing unit in its return travel.
The construction of the hammer of a sliding type has a special device to minimize the time between the initial two shots.
There are only five AK-74 components borrowed by Nikonov from a well-know rifle. These are the following:
buttstock hinge with release knob,
pistol grip,
magazine,
optic sight base located on the left side of stock and
cleaning kit.

All of the reviews say that AN 94 is an improvement over AK series but for some reason I haven't seen any pictures of it being used by combat troops even though it was adopted years ago. According to russian sources AN 94 suppose to be as reliable or even better than AK series although I do have my doubts since it is more complicated. If anyone has any pictures of it in action, please post. For now, in my opinion, the best all around assault rifle is/are AK 100 series. I do like German G36 series alot but it still has to combat prove itself on a large scale like AK.

yes its as dependable yet more accurate then the previous ak series and yes it was slated to be issued to russian forces but russia does not have the money to do so thus leaving the rifle up for future exports. all this info was featured on russian guns on the history channel with interviews with kalashnakov and opinions of the an94 and its issue to russian forces.

The idea - increase hit probability by firing two (or more) bullets very fast (or in the same time) before recoil hit the shooter - isn't new. Americans have the project SALVO (multibarrel) than duplex rounds and in 80s ACR program. In fact Abakan competition is delayed Russian answer for ACR project (this one with G11 assault rifle, caseless). All of them failed.
So, in early 80s GRAU also tried to solve this problem and started Abakan competition, which winner was Nikonov with his ASM assault rifle, later called AN-94 (Avtomat Nikonova). But, and it's important, none of those rifles really meet the competition first requirement: to twice increase combat effectiveness in comparison with the previous (i.e. AK-74) model. Say it in normal language: to 5-10 decreased scatter of bullets in full auto fire. So in 1993 AN-94 was officialy adopted by Russian Army, after some test.
So, it took them 12 years and lots of prototypes (An-94 is ca. 12th prototype of first Nikonov's model ASM some of them VERY strange) to delelops the rifle.

...and it turned out that nobody really wants the new weapon. Spetsnaz who also tested AN-94 said that is "nice toy" but they stay in real combat with AK-74. Also Russian Army bought AK-74IDU and next the "black" AK-74M (base model for AK series 100) despite of AN-94.
According to russian sources AN 94 suppose to be as reliable or even better than AKYeah, sure ;)
If anyone has any pictures of it in action, please post. Well, only a few AN-94s were in real combat. So I don't think there are any pictures of it.
For now, in my opinion, the best all around assault rifle is/are AK 100 series.Why? AK 10x are just export models of AK-74M in 7,62mm or 5,45mm, and the only nation who buys them is Indonesia for special police units.

What can I say, I just love the looks of it :) On a serious note, it is the most reliable and the easiest to operate assault rifle out there. Granted there are more accurate rifles in existence, but be honest how many people can hit a target beyond 400m? So if you add up all the things that really matter you get the answer: "AK". All of that futuristic stuff like OICW and such is great on the shooting range but what will happen to it on the actual battelfield with snow, mud, rain, sand, dirt, what if it will be droped? How will all of the mentioned things affect state of the art electronics, what if the battery dies and there is nowhere to recharge it? There is a saying: "All of the great things are simple". I believe that true advance is when things are simplified and not become overcomplicated and subject to too many variables...
Although, like I have mentioned before, I do like G36 alot and think that US should dump M16/4 family for it, but unfortunatelly it is all about politics.

The next-generation rifle that the US military is going to use is the XM8, a design by HK that is essentially an improved G36. I believe they're going to start trials of it this year or next.

The G11 actually succeeded and was going to be introduced into German service. (The weight and eventual cost savings of not having to produce cases for rounds was very significant.). What killed it was the huge cost of integration with East Germany. The cost of changing to the new calibre that was mostly new technology and mass producing it was too expensive so the G-3 was reintroduced and a replacement in 5.56mm adopted.
The whole idea of firing two rounds nearly simultanously so that they impact close together was not to improve accuracy, but to improve hit probability. If you aim and fire at a target firing two projectiles that travel relatively closely together on a similar path and impact the target nearly together increases the chance of hitting a small or moving target. A bit like firing hundreds of pellets from each shotgun round means that precise accuracy is not needed... of course multiple pellet hits are required for a clean kill, and with proper heavy projectiles a single hit might to the job.
The main problem with duplex rounds has been the lack of individual bullet weight. A 5.56mm duplex round would use projectiles in the 20-30 grain weight range... ie .22lr projectiles weigh from 32-40grain. Duplex rounds for 50 cal MGs as widely used on the 4 barrel gatling on a Hind helo make more sense when used against exposed troops. Individual 50 cal rounds are overkill, but with two rounds weighing 31 grammes each... or about 480 grain at about 700mps is still very deadly and effectively doubles the rate of fire of the weapon used (in the case of the Hind Gatling this equates to 10,000 rpm with duplex rounds).
The advantage of the Abakan is that it uses standard rounds of 53 and 62 grain. THe full range of AP and tracer rounds can be used.
