Just wondering if it would be a good idea to use one thread for people to post links to video clips on the Internet of battle footage, etc. Some of us do not have ready access to cable news, and it seems that not much has been shown on network tv. The link to the sky tv clip was a good one.

Good idea.

Here is a link to a page of the Irish news broadcasts. RTE (the Irish national broadcast station) have a number of reporters in Iraq. One with the Kurds in the North East, one in Kuwait, and one, still, in Bagdhad.

http://www.rte.ie/news/2003/0323/iraqavlinks.html

All broadcasts are 56k RealPlayer friendly and some are worth a look.

The 2 that are good is foxnews.com, and even better,

http://www.sky.com/skynews/home

They have edited footage which only shows the highlights which has some excellent footage of the various battles.

Has anyone found a link to the nighttime footage shot of the British engagement at Al Faw? (Footage shows troops opening fire on some building.)

www.*******.com

look at the raw video

the battle footages are not as cut up as when you see them in the news and you can hear what's being said

take a look at the apache down footage you'd think the iraqis had found a UFO.

and this elderly farmer with a WW1 rifle claims to have shot it down

then they all start dancing arround, hilarious stuff.

I'm not sure if the pilots were taken prisoner, as 3 I.D. weren't far away

Even though it is against the Geneva Convention, I think Iraq putting the P.O.W.s on television almost guarantees that they will live, so I'm thankful they violated in that respect.

If you have Kazaa search combat footage. I got some stuff off there. Also search for

The fastest man in iraq

vietnam war footage (dont view if you will be offended by war or stuff that went on in vietnam)

special forces helo night raid (bad ass)

ac130_gunship

let the bodies hit the floor (the artist is USAF)

Does anyone know how to actually download these clips from Windows Media Player?

You can't download streaming clips... it's protected from doing that. That said, here's a pretty good one of Marines searching the area while in a hot zone. One has a jammed m249...

Try a search for WMR41 (Windows Media Record) on-line. This program is a pain to use for the clips at Sky.com. You can also download Hi-Net Recorder at:
http://www.hoonnet.co.kr/productdown/HiNetRecorderSetup.exe

I don't know if the latest version has commands in English or not--the website use to have an English version of the pages, but those seemed to have disappeared. If you have any troubles with this recorder, let me know.

After some digging, it looks like foxnews.com has all their video available via straight http, so it's unprotected if you save the asx or wvx file, and using getright or a download manager, just download the .wmv file that's in the asx file. I think they're the only ones that are doing that though. Using graphedit, you can grab video from any of these also, which is pretty darn silly... I'd try the above method first though.

Hi Hood,
I tried using the getright browser to go through the foxnews site, but I haven't found the video files. Would you happen to have an address for the clip with the Marines that you posted previously? Or perhaps the name of the folder I should be searching with Getright browser? Thanks very much!

click on the link I have above for the foxnews thing. that'll open up the window with media player in it. wait until it starts buffering or playing the video, and right click on it. hit properties and it'll give you the URL for a WVX or ASX file. using getright, grab that url/file. open the resulting file up with notepad and in there, will be the http url's for the WMV files. then just get those wmv files with getright. let me know how that works out for you...

Hi Hood,

I remember doing this before; both last time and this time when I checked the properties, there wasn't an actual file name, just a number. For the above file I got this:
0,3783,1054:300,00

hood
03-31-2003, 03:09 PM
well make sure you get the whole thing, which would be:

http://www.foxnews.com/video2/windows/0,3783,1054:300,00.wvx

Save that. and open it up with notepad and inside you'll see the WMV file url's.

Hood- It's a video clip that's being shared on Kazaa. Do a search for military in the video files and you should be able to get it.

Ok--you can't use a download manager program for the sky.com clips. You need to get wmr41 or hinet recorder--see my previous post for the url to get hinet recorder. I recommend that for getting the clips from sky.com. (wmr41 works well for other sites, but is rather temperamental with sky.com). Hopefully the latest player has labels in English. If not, let me know. The sky.com clips have urls like the following:

Hello Hood, if you want to record real media files (.rm or .ram), get Streambox VCR 1beta31. (There may be a more up-to-date version at this point.) You should be able to find it through a search on the Internet. I thought I had a link for it, but I can't find it at the moment. Streambox can record .mpg, .wmv, .asx. and real media files--however sometimes you have to use a different program for .wmv or .asx, I don't know why. Different programs have different compatabilities with different sites.

Ok, I downloaded it and installed it. When I run the file, it pops up in the Recorder. It shows three links. And I hit record. It's down downloading all three links. Now what do I do?

Hit the button with three bars -- the options button--and under Preferences, check out the "Default Path"--this will tell you what is the default directory to which your files are being saved. You can use Hi-Net Recorder to play the files [Use Open under the same three-bar button], or you can use WM Player.

Yeah, it doesn't appear to work with a lot of sites, but I've been able to record stuff from websites which don't have any protection against recording, either because the files are older, or the websites are not that copyright conscious. I suspect websites using Real Player One have some sort of blocking either in the software, in the file format itself, or perhaps the protocol.

Evidently with the producers of the big-name streaming formats are making it more and more difficult for people to copy stuff. (Quicktime being a big example of how much things have changed.)

We're "fortunate" insofar as we're still able to copy .wmv and .asf files...

Check this one out. Shows off the MK19 grenade launcher, 50 cal sniper rifle, and a TOW style missile launcher in Iraq. The MK19 is incredible. I didn't realize it fired those things so fast.

I was watching Fox last night when Shepard Smith showed raw footage of the war. There was an astonishing zoomed shot of 3 iraqi soldiers in the distance (this i believe was shot in northern Iraq with the Kurds) walking and all of the sudden a huge explosion complete with shockwaves on a building they were walking near. Next thing you knew, all three were knocked to the ground, the camera zooms out, and Kurds in the back erupted in cheers. Did anyone get to see that footage or know if fox has posted it up?

Yeah, it's here.

http://66.230.216.3/040103/foxfan_b-roll_040103_300.wmv

If it didn't consist of several smaller explosions I would have thought it was a MOAB. It was HUGE.

Has anyone seen any footage of the SF Rescue Op? I read that a few of the members had cameras mounted on them.

Although this may sound stupid. Does anyone know how to convert the Windows Media files into Quicktime?
