Britain outlines case against attack on Iran: report

Sun, Jan 23, 2005

LONDON (AFP) - Foreign Secretary Jack Straw has drawn up Britain's case against a military strike on Iran amid fears US President George W. Bush may seek support for a new conflict, a newspaper reported.

Straw has produced a 200-page dossier that rules out military action and makes the case for a "negotiated solution" to thwart Iran's suspected ambition to produce nuclear weapons, The Sunday Times reported.

It says a peaceful solution led by Britain, France and Germany is "in the best interests of Iran and the international community," while referring to "safeguarding Iran's right to the peaceful use of nuclear technology."

The dossier, entitled Iran's Nuclear Programme, was quietly issued in the House of Commons on the eve of Bush's inauguration last week for fear of provoking a public rift with Washington, the newspaper said.

However, it added that privately tensions are running high between the two nations.

The approach contrasts with the British government's two Iraq dossiers, which were trumpeted to make the case for joining the US-led invasion on March 2003.

The Sunday Times said the message that the British government wants no part in another war in the Middle East will be reinforced by Prime Minister Tony Blair when he meets Bush in Brussels next month and at an Anglo-American summit in Washington after the British general election, expected in May.

It said Straw will also make the case when he meets US secretary of state nominee Condoleezza Rice, a Bush confidante, in London next month.

The perception that the United States is embarking on a course of confrontation with Iran has grown since The New Yorker magazine reported this week that US commandos have been operating inside Iran since mid-2004, secretly scouting targets for possible air strikes.

The Pentagon attacked the story by investigative reporter Seymour Hersh as "riddled with errors of fundamental fact" but did not expressly deny conducting covert reconnaissance missions.

Vice President **** Cheney, declaring on a radio talk show this week that Iran was "right at the top of the list" of global problems, warned that Israel might launch a pre-emptive strike on its own to shut down Iran's nuclear program.

But Cheney played down the likelihood of US military action.

Yea so stay out of his way or you will get smash boy! lol
By the way I think Straw is using the threat from America in order to broker a solution, good show on straw I respect the opportunity the UK is taking it might actually work so have a little faith. It's all politics.

I think GWB and his pet poodle Tony Bliar ought to seriously re-consider any aspirations they have against Iraq.

OK, so the 2003 invasion of Iraq wasn't exactly a walk in the park, but it wasn't a major struggle either - any such attempt to invade Iran will be an altogether different ballgame. The Iranian armed forces are well trained, well equipped, and what is more well motivated!

It is quite clear that Bush thinks he has a divine right to wage war on whoever he likes when he likes, but keep us out of it.............or better still keep him out of it and save tens of thousands of lives on each side, because that is what the result will be!

Time to sing "....you WILL walk alone" for British football fans...

No way the Brit army will be part of this one; might be the best funded in the EU but it still can't afford a major war + peace enforcing Op every other year.

I can't understand the American view that nobody can have nukes but themselves! Especially as nobody else in history has set the precedent of using them!
The only reason they need nukes is as a deterrent to America. Sad but true.

That even its cloest ally is against this should send a message to those in favour.

Wether they take notice or not, thats their problem.

Bottom line is that us Brits dont have the manpower or the money to commit to a punchup in Iran - even if we wanted to. We are a lot smaller and a lot poorer. If its going to to stretch the US, we've got no hope of contributing anything meaningful. Doubt we could even make the sandwiches. Jack Staw is saying its not a good idea, and if he can carry the day so much the better. Diplomacy beats body bags anyday.

Indeed, I think some of the American forget just how small we are. I saw on a bbc forum one yank who was rather avid in his belief that Britain should commit the same number of troops to Iraq as America....despite the fact thats probably more than the whole operation strength of our army ( havent checked the exact figures)

For the rest of the hysterical Eurowussies, Bush hasn't attacked Iran yet. You mourn for Iran like it's already a smoking crater. As much as American intel wants Iran to think they're about to get pummeled, there won't be an Iran invasion. stuntman is right about Straw.

Considering irans backing of extremist organisations i am sure this is not merely a case of stopping iran having nuclear weapons but stopping extremists in the iranian hirearchy from giving or allowing those extremist groups access to nuclear radioactive material for dirty bombs or actual low yield nuclear weapons.
North korea is obivously a larger threat when it comes to states with nuclear weapons. The worrying thing about iran is its past of supporting extremists.
Jack straw has got the right idea, get some dialogue going to start with.

LOL they've got 120,000 + just in Iraq, IIRC from the last count when the cuts were anounced it was something like 110,000 - 119,000 for our whole army.
