It's a Panhard M11, also called VBL or "Véhicule Blindé Léger".

Actually....it's the contrary, really. Considering France's pro-arab policy, it's much more a case of "look, I am French, don't shoot me".

Also one of the reasons why several ISAF contingents aren't wearing desert camouflage; this way, they are very different from the US troops there who wear mostly DCUs and can't be mistaken for US soldiers.

Panhard M11 is a great vehicle. Light but more protected than a Hummer woot

marines?

It's quite typical of what happens in the French army with vehicles on operations that are left in country and that are rotated through different units every 4 to 6 months.

Airborne units will paint the para wings, Chasseurs (light infantry units) will paint their horn insignia, Tirailleurs (former North African units) will paint the islamic crescent (yes !), marines will paint their anchors...only line infantry units tend to leave their vehicles alone even though each Bn has specific insignias.

So this pic could be either a marine VAB or another unit which did not bother to spray the marine anchor...

happens in every army I guess

Chasseur alpin's, didn't they have units in Norway in 1940?
I know there were mountain troops from france there, are these from the same unit, if they are, a great historical unit.
