Students Arrested Over 'Violent' Stick Figure Drawings
Pictures Show Classmate Being Stabbed, Hung

POSTED: 1:40 am EST January 26, 2005
UPDATED: 3:07 pm EST January 26, 2005

OCALA, Fla. -- Two boys, ages 9 and 10, were charged with felonies and taken away from school in handcuffs, accused of making violent drawings of stick figures.

The boys were arrested Monday on charges of making a written threat to kill or harm another person, a second-degree felony.

The special education students used pencil and red crayon to draw primitive stick figure scenes on scrap paper that showed a 10-year-old classmate being stabbed and hung, police said.

"The officer found they were drawing these pictures for the sole purpose of intimidating and scaring the victim," said Ocala Police Sgt. Russ Kern.

The boy depicted in the drawings told his teacher, who took the sketches and contacted the school dean, Marty Clifford. Clifford called police, who arrested the boys after consulting with the State Attorney's Office.

They were also suspended from school.

One drawing showed the two boys standing on either side of the other boy and "holding knives pointed through" his body, according to a police report. The figures were identified by written names or initials.

Another drawing showed a stick figure hanging, tears falling from his eyes, with two other stick figures standing below him. Other pieces of scrap paper listed misspelled profanities and the initials of the boy who was allegedly threatened.

Parents of both of the arrested boys said they thought the boys should be punished by the school and families, not the legal system.

Ocala police said they stand behind the decision to arrest the children.

"When an adult or even myself look at the picture looked at it at first I was thinking there is really not much to the picture or I would not be that scared by the picture those children drew," Ocala police spokesman Russ Kearn said. "However, we have to put ourselves in his mind and that's the bottom line here. It is his well-being and the way he perceived that picture to be. It actually put him in extreme fear and he was in fear for his life."

The only thing that really makes this bad is there are names associated with the stick figures, that's generally a sign they need help. A similar thing happened in South Florida 1~2 years ago where a junior higher brutally murdered a fellow classmate in a bathroom with a knife, and there were warning signs and all with the same kind of simple drawings and rantings though.

In 5th grade I drew a picture of a race car (my dad worked the pits) and it had a fire extinguisher strapped to the roll cage. They sent me to a psychologist to deal with my "abnormal fear of being burned to death". My parents had to educate my teacher, counselor, principal and the psychologist as to what's inside a race car before they'd let up (2 weeks of counseling). Never assume that those in academia have any freaking clue as to what the world is like outside of their classroom.

Get stuffed, it was always the Aussies who were dodging bullets and throwing grenades and taking out tanks with a single punch and picking up the ladies (hang on, we were a bit too young then) and winning Victoria Crosses and and raising the Aussie flag over enemy fortresses! The Yanks and Poms and Kiwis were generally the ones who died en masse just to show we weren't biased towards the Allies while the Aussies took all the glory.

Depending on the details of this situation, like whether there is some kind of pre-existing conflict between the kids, I don't know if it warranted an actual arrest.

Suspension yes. You don't want to just ignore those kinds of signs. Not anymore, and I agree that it's not 'just the school's responsibility'.

I think the kids should be sent to counselling.

What i'm more concerned about is that if a conviction is recorded it could set a dangoures precedent.

Who is to say that lobby groups could use this as a way to stop art that depicts violence, erotic art etc?

Take my Avatar for example. If these kids do end up being convicted what is to stop say a right wing religious group from taking the producer to court and have him charged for depicting violence against women?

I know this case and morality in art are two different things but the fact remains that legal proceedings against these two kids could give grounds for nut case lobby groups ammunition in their never ending pursuit to rid the art world of depicting violence.

Think about it. It's happened before unrelated cases being used as a argument in a court of law.

1st through 3rd grade was spent drawing stick figure wars.. some days it would ww2.. others ww1, others civil way type stuff or napoleonic. then id get boring and id draw space ships and jet packs.. then it would be a mix, then it would go back to the old stuff. haha and i never got in trouble for any of it.. even when i drew pictures of stick figures testing out machine guns on another group of stickfigures "in masse" charging the nest. haha good times.
