Rowan Tink on the SAS ... "It's a crack unit - fighting fit, flexible, capable, poised to switch in any direction at a moment's notice, fight clandestine battles one day and overt the next." Photo: Mike Bowers

Meet the 'most outed SAS officer in history'

By Jonathan King
April 24, 2004

He calls himself "the most outed SAS officer in history". Lt. Colonel Rowan Tink says he has become the face of Australia's Special Air Services since hitting the front pages in late 2002 after winning the American Bronze Star.

The honour was for leadership during Operation Anaconda in Afghanistan earlier that year. Although still bound by secrecy, he said that operation had gone well.

The SAS providing screening and blocking forces along with air support and close fire for US troops whose helicopter crashed near a mountain top.

But then "al Qaeda forces suddenly decided to stand and fight on their own ground, creating some doubt as to whether we would achieve our objectives".

Although now faced with possible armoured attack, he said "the SAS formed into troop-sized anti-armed ambush formation and fought back, supporting the US forces during some very heavy enemy engagement".

Having helped win that battle, the SAS then provided first aid for 30 American casualties and helped their evacuation.

"It was a close shave for the Americans but together we overcame that worrying time."

Lt. Col Tink was commanding a 150 strong SAS task group in Afghanistan from Bagramir air force base and Kandahir.

"We were there to support the US led coalition to remove the Taliban from government and create the conditions necessary to form a democratic government," he said.

"The US asked us to provide a specialist service, focusing on long range surveillance and reconnaissance during sustained periods in the field."

Lt. Col Tink enlisted at 18 straight from Sydney's Scots College cadets after his father sold the family farm, because he loved "the concept of soldiering".

Although now a training officer he is proud to have served in the field with the SAS whose motto "Who Dares Wins" says it all, he said .

"It's a crack unit - fighting fit, flexible, capable, poised to switch in any direction at a moment's notice, fight clandestine battles one day and overt the next."

Although other SAS officers cannot show their faces for security Lt. Col. Tink says he supports the war against terrorism and is happy to represent a force which is helping the government "to do all it can to defeat terrorism".

I didn't know australia had access to MK-19's and always thought the .50 was mounted on them??

Those guys have certainly kicked some ass for the small amount of troops that are present woot

Rest In Peace for the fallen soldier.
