There are quite a few pics around where they use what appears to be a wire cutter? (correct me if i am wrong) on the front of vehicles like this.. have they been experiencing insrugents or whoever putting wires across streets or between trees or whatever?

It is a wire cutter. Most likely just there as a precaution in case insurgents were to use wires across roads.
Alot of the Canadian vehicles in afghanistan have wire cutters and I've never heard of them actually being needed. Just in case. :)
Great pics btw woot

Just out of curiosity.. .
Are Dutch soldiers allowed to smoke weed on foreign missions? Obviously not while on duty, but on days off, if they have any. And same for Dutch embassies, in theory would the dutch ambassador be allowed to smoke weed in the dutch embassy, or the staff? As embbasy soil is soil of the nation in question.

NO is the answer to that. Contary to popular belief "wiet" is not classed as a legal substance in NL. Only in designated places you are allowed to utilize it. If you carry a "large" quantity you ccan be prosecuted. Dont know the details though

But most of the Euro hardware hasn't been proven in combat, the US hardware has proven to be effective.
Dutch forces also use canuck gear, like the Diemaco C7 and C8.
They also use some Euro gear though, like Eurocopter's Cougar, which is basicly an upgraded Puma, if I'm not mistaken.
German tanks.. Leopard 2 in A5 and A6 versions.

I think its largely to do with whom the Dutch will fight alongside and who can supply things at a good price. A lot of EU kit has seen combat - just talk to FN or HK. If you are always going to deploy with the British or the US, it makes`sense to get similar kit so getting spares is not so problematical.

Oh, and I think our Navy still uses the FN FAL, but there are rumours about changing to G3 together with UK Marines/Navy, because of the UK-NL Brigade, which often do Naval landings together.
So you might just be right about the logistical part mr. Oldsoak.

First of all the netherlands belong to Europe (if DigitalMarine likes it or not p-) ). So they shouldnīt been in Iraq and shouldnīt need combat proven equipment. But that belongs to the political section.
From the logistic point of view itīs better to have less suppliers. Having US and european equipment makes it more difficult, I think. But Iīm not a expert for military logistics. :P

Jeroen Severs was killed when he was patrolling in his unarmoured(!!!!!!!!!) jeep, it was horrible there were RPG's fired at his jeep and MG's were firing on him too .... but our forces returned fire they shot up 2000 rounds including M203's.... even our Apaches were send into action.

2 men who tried to keep peace in a country full of bull**** have been killed, talk about injustice.
I think we should stay till the job is done.
Our goverment stuck her nose into it and now our country is involved to deeply to just leave and forget.
2 of our soldiers were killed, now we should kill all the terrorist scum we can get our hands on.
UHm.. I mean.. continue peace-keeping.
exactly, we should stay and in our area it is actually going quite well, so why leave the people alone.
but is that also the opinion of the majority of the Dutch people?
Here in Belgium, a vast majority was and is contra sending Belgian troops, only a few politicians had the courage of suggesting it. But it won't happen, that 's sure.

But for how long? Do you expect iraq being ever a democratic country?
One day the americans will leave beacuse of the huge number of their own casualties. After the americans left iraq the insurgents will concentrate on other nations like................................Holland. :|

Isnt it always that the people dont want their soldiers to go to war?
Sometimes it just has to happen. and it's what they signed up for... they're soldiers/warriors... lets not forget that.

Yeah I believe it's called the bodybag-syndrome..
People are afraid of soldiers getting killed, but they forget it is his job.
They prevent soldiers from doing what they have to do, because they are too selfish to let go.
Which I can understand, but I don't agree with them.
Soldiers are professionals, Dutch soldiers are UBERprofessional, so they shoudl just shut their mouths and let those soldiers do their jobs!

Read your own post again, please.
Correct, soldiers were payed for (possibly) being killed. But they also were payed for enforcing the interests of their countries population. What if the population is against this war? In my opinion then the soldiers donīt "work" for the interests of their own compatriots anymore.

I agree with you, Van Leeuwen.
but i don't like our troops getting killed either... i felt sick for days when i read that we lost our first soldier... :| but i know it's their duty and they know it is the risk of their job... and when i look at this:

I see that the soldiers from all countries in the coalition are doing their job well.
And that all the efforts are worth it :)

yes you're right, but there is a general disapproval in Belgium, towards the war in Iraq. Now, I don't know if this disapproval of the war is that great in Holland.
Nevertheless, I admire the Dutch for their courage and efforts to take part in the war in Iraq.

you have 404 Fennek vehicles in your army (double number than germany has) as such a small country,

belgium has 36 Agusta A-10 fighting helicopters

but what does it matter?
We spoke bout your self defence, that can be done also against enemies like Russia, for the cause that it maches trough belarus, poland and germany and is on your border then,
and if those countrys did attack you, you would also have to fight against their MBTs and other stuff..

nowhere near operational
but what does it matter?
the point I was trying to make was that our military is more then capable of defending our own borders, it's a modern highly accurate and well trained force and any of our neighbours will have a hell of a time braking it down
We spoke bout your self defence, that can be done also against enemies like Russia, for the cause that it maches trough belarus, poland and germany and is on your border then,

we're not an independant nation anymore, if Russia decides to march through Poland then we will send our troops their to bolster their forces and stop the russians and I would assume that Germany will do the same.
besides if they manage to fight their way through Europe regardless of the casualties there's no way for us to stand up against them anyways ... there's just not enough Dutchmen to go around
anyways
since the topic mentions Afghanistan as well here's some Astan pics ... they're pretty old (2002) so I don't know wether they've been posted yet but I don't really care anyways :P

it must be said that the Dutch tanks are not in a very good condition:

if it's overseas and not during an excercise then you can be 90% sure that it's not a Dutch tank.
anyways, solving some riddles while browsing through the topic (never did that ... nice pics woot woot )

These dutchies. As if there isnīt enough space to land with all tires on the ground. :cantbeli:
aren't they taking a great and unnecessery risk here?
btw: very nice pictures
groeten uit België ;)
Hahaha, look carefully and you'll notice that the wheels actually landed on the ground behind the quarry.... rofl :petting:
british lam0r...
look at the shadow and you will see that those weels are in the air..
so the question remains, why are they taking such an unnecesarry risk?
Because they can. They are cool dutchies!!!!!
Yea our pilots are so cool they can do loops with Chinooks p-)
Actually, I have no idea why they would take the risk, all I can think of is a fast Infil?
Loops with Chinooks! woot woot woot
"Fast infil" as an explenation makes no sense. There is enough space for a fast infil without having the risk. ;)
the correct answer is 'to preserve fuel'
the helicopter doesn't actually land so it doesn't need to take off again so wich either increases its range or it's time in the area of operations.
and it's cheaper too (unless it crashes but that hasn't happened yet).
As embbasy soil is soil of the nation in question.
nope not a chance no drugs and if the politicians have it their way no alcohol either when you're outside the country. you can get away with occasionally smoking weed in your own time when you're back home if you keep it to a minimum (depends on your CO I guess) but other then that you can't do drugs.
Btw. why do the dutchies have so much US equipment? Why donīt they buy european stuff? Is there a reason behind it?
because the equipment is the most cost effective.
besides it's not really true anyways, maybe for the airforce but definately not the navy (Dutchbuilt) or the Army (lots of german built vehicles) and now the howitzers and armoured vehicles are also being replaced by European equipment (pzh2000 for m109 and Fennek, Boxer, CV9035 for the YPR series).
If the Europeans want us to buy more European equipment then the Europeans should start either offering us bigger discounts or better products. Our army is about defence not about economics or politics
Local NPD leader? We donīt have one of them in every town, kaaskopp! p-)
Btw. we only would need 2 or 3 military cooks to take the netherlands. :bash: p-)
only if you firebomb Rotterdam again and you can't because you won't have air superiority this time around :P
