Chinese government expresses condolences at Zhao's funeral
Fri, Jan 28, 2005

BEIJING (AFP) - The Chinese government expressed condolences to the family of purged leader Zhao Ziyang who was cremated at a cemetery in Beijing.

Breaking its silence on the funeral, the official Xinhua news agency said Jia Qinglin, the number four in the Chinese Communist Party, "and other senior officials" were at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery to bid Zhao farewell.

"Comrade Zhao Ziyang, who passed away on January 17 at the age of 85, was cremated at the Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery in western Beijing Saturday morning," Xinhua said in a brief dispatch.

"On behalf of the leaders of the central authorities, Jia Qinglin and other senior officials were at the cemetery to bid farewell to the remains of Comrade Zhao and expressed condolences to his families."

The government has sought to keep the ceremony low-key to avoid it being a rallying point for those dissatisfied with the ruling Communist Party.

Zhao was premier and communist party chief for much of the 1980s, but was purged and put under house arrest for 15 years until his death for opposing the military crackdown on the 1989 Tiananmen Square pro-democracy protests.

I am Australian living in China!

Would certainly say right now, China is not ready for a democratic government like that of the US, UK, Aus or so on. Nobody here knows how to do anything like that. Corruption is rife, Social issues are rife, overpopulation is a serious issue and so on.

I am sick of people saying or implying the only way to instil the Democratic dream is by sudden and often violent forms of revolt. Sure i think China will become democratic within the next 30years, but not within the next 15years!

Too bad they did not also offer condolences to the thousands of democratic protesters that died the same year he was deposed.

He was the highest party member to support the students and was sacked for it.

Again, China proves that it is still a dictatorship and corrupt nation state.

At the moment, the majority or Chinese are relatively happy with the current form of government. Things are getting better for them, they are more wealthy, they have house, food....they can remember when they didnt....why would they want to change something many see as good?

Quite frankly, I do not care. I am tired of my nation dealing China as an equal.

China is no better than Libya. They have something we want so we cut a deal that makes life easier for a nation that completely disrespects civil liberties and ANY concept of justice.

This is not about the people of China its about their goddamn government.
