I found this story to be absolutely disgusting. Just because Libya "renounced" terrorism and agreed to a half assed apology for its decades of terrorist attacks (and illegal wars on its neighbors), attacks which killed dozens of Americans and thousands of others, Gaddaffi has now become "Mr. Popular" with the Bush administration.

It seems Libya will now be recieving the same status as Suadi Arabia with the corrupt pig Bush administration. Im not sure exactly what Bush's name for that status is but it most be something close to "Terrorist friends with oil".

Im sorry, but being a dictator and opening up your country to allow US oil giants to rape it of its resources while the pitiful people you rule over with an iron fist get NOTHING for it is purely wrong and shows that Bush doesnt give a damn about "freedom".

I seem to remmember Bush mentioning freedom something like 67 times in his speech. He loves to talk about his god given mission to spread freedom accross the Middle East. It seems freedom can be eliminated in Bush's mind through the simple act of bribery.

I wonder too, does Bush even care to see the lie and hyprocricy involved when he does buisness with a dictator (Bush seems to have a nasty habit of making best friends with dictators around the world). Does he even pause to wonder about the moral implications of buying ultra cheap oil from a terrorist scumbag dictator who has the blood of innocent Americans on his hands. I wonder also if he considers that this oil is being robbed from the people of Libya. Robbed first by the evil terrorist pig Gaddaffi who is a dictator and rules by terror and force, and robbed again by America who see's the opportunity to take all Libyan oil away at cheap prices BEFORE actualy created freedom in Libya where the people can have some say in what is done with thier own resources!!!!!!!

You either tell the whole story or you keep your mouth shut. Europe has been courting this guy for years now. Wanting his oil. Our nation is just as guilty as ANY member of the EU and Britain.

I disagree with it. I think we should have let this guy rot and his nation along with him. but the world decided to go the opposite route. The Un put them on the Human Rights board....come on.

Quit being a hypocrite.

Anyone know where those images of the German and French leaders getting a tour of a Libyan refinery are? They were posted in a "Today in Photos" section.

The U.S. was the main obstacle to Libya's restitution.

The U.S. removed the 'obstacles' and now, the U.S. ended up with the oil contracts instead of it's competitors.

A coincedence? ;)

It's only logical to assume a deal was cut. And for the benefit of the American people. (This might be a case wherein U.S. diplomats actually did their job! Not surprising that this would be the case since oil is involved  )

Though try as we might we couldn't keep the U.N. and the EU from giving Libya a blow job. ;)

Durandal, what's wrong with obd's post? You're right, European leaders made business recently with Lybia (the first , my former President , Jose MAria Aznar ).
I'm not gonna judge if this is right or wrong, but when France and Germany restarted diplomatic relations with Lybia many americans in this forum (i won't give names) were immediatly bashing Chirac and Schroeder, saying how evil they are (and selectively forgetting about Aznar's visit to Lybia).

The Euros are pissed because after all the work they've done to cozy up to terrorist regimes, Gaddafi' STILL goes with America because he knows thats the choice to make if he wants to move up in the world.

Hmmm...you missed my point. I do not think ANYONE should be dealing with him and if you criticize anyone for dealing with him, it should be everyone involved, not just the United States.

This selective bashing...be it against America or any other groups of nations is getting old.

Hmmm, you might as well read this why these contracts were awarded to the Americans, before you make your own conclusions. ;)

Biden Describes Gadhafi's Stated Motives
White House - AP Cabinet & State

WASHINGTON - Why did Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi suddenly decide to give up his doomsday weapons? Sen. Joseph Biden (news, bio, voting record), D-Del., said Wednesday he posed that question to Gadhafi during a meeting in Tripoli last year. Biden described their discussion to Condoleezza Rice (news - web sites), President Bush (news - web sites)'s nominee to be secretary of state, at her Senate Foreign Relations confirmation hearing.

According to Biden, Gadhafi said he acted as he did because possession of nuclear weapons did the United States no good in Vietnam or Iraq.

Beyond that, Biden reported Gadhafi as saying, if he used nuclear weapons, "you'd blow me away," referring to the United States.

Gadhafi also said Libyan disarmament would enable his country to resume normal U.S. trade and economic ties, the senator said.

"I can have American oil companies in here pumping the oil out of the ground," Biden said he was told. The senator said Gadhafi said he prefers dealing with Americans as opposed to, say, the French.

"You make a deal with the French, they say 90-10 and they take 95. The Americans, you say 50-50, they only take 50," Gadhafi said, according to Biden.

Gadhafi was, Biden said, "the most candid guy I ever spoke with."

Biden cited his encounter with Gadhafi in urging Rice to open negotiations with Iran on ending the country's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Biden asked Rice if she would be willing to cut a deal with Iran.

"I'm not going to get into hypotheticals until I know what I'm looking at," Rice said. "That's the answer."

Gadhafi agreed in 2003, during negotiations with the United States and Britain, to do away with his weapons of mass destruction.

Libya disappoints European firms
31/01/2005 16:59 - (SA)

Tripoli - European oil companies, left out in the cold by Libya's handout of oil exploration permits mainly to US firms at the weekend, said they hoped this would change this year.
"It was a bad start," one European oil executive told AFP, after Tripoli allocated 11 of 15 exploration licences, the first granted to foreigners for 40 years, to US companies.

Indian, Canadian, Algerian, Indonesian and Australian companies took the others - despite a recent trail of European leaders to the north African country, including France's President Jacques Chirac and the British and Italian prime ministers Tony Blair and Silvio Berlusconi.

European countries which tendered for the permits included the French firms Total and Gaz de France, Spain's Repsol, Italy's Agip and Britain's BP.

None succeeeded.

"The European offers were much meaner than the American offers," one Libyan source said.

"The main criterion for success is the amount of production that the company pledges to give up to the national company," he said, adding that the Europeans set their figure "too low" compared to the Americans. He gave no details.

One Western diplomat, who asked not to be named, said more offers on the table this year from Libya could correct the imbalance.

"Saturday's bad start could be corrected, despite the symbolic side" of US firms taking the lion's share, bringing US companies back in force to Libya after years of repeated political contention between Tripoli and Washington.

Tripoli is expected to give foreign companies a chance to compete for two more sets of contracts. The first is planned in a month, encompassing 40 exploration blocks, while a second batch may go on offer at the end of the third quarter.

A total of 150 firms took part in bidding for rights to hunt for oil in the 15 blocks covering 127 000 square kilometres in Libya, which has Africa's largest oil reserves.

The successful companies have to invest a total of $750m in oil exploration, with significant spending afterwards to exploit any finds.

You missed my point too. If you read my post i say i won't judge if it's wrong or not. I'm not even bashing the US, i'm simply pointing out a case of selective memory. You can check threads about the topic, many people (mostly the usual anti-french ones) critizised France and Germany (especially when Italy and Spain had ties with Lybia too)strongly, and now i don't see them speaking about terrorism and evilness regarding Gaddafi .

If you want my personal opinion, it's not that bad. We all should make business with them (not with weapons or military stuff) because Lybia is not only Gaddafi, there are millions of Lybians living in poverty, and sanctions are not the best way of helping them.
