Zettelmeyer front-end loader

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN - A Canadian combat engineer clearing the same route in Kabul where two soldiers were killed this month was uninjured when his vehicle struck a landmine on Wednesday.

The engineer, whose name was not released, was taken to a field hospital near Camp Julien for observation.

The engineer's lightly armoured construction vehicle struck the device west of the Canadian military base.

Officials were investigating what caused the explosion that damaged the Zettelmeyer front-end loader.

The vehicle had been following a group of combat engineers on foot. It was scraping the track with a bucket when it hit the mine.

The engineers were involved in mine-clearing operations to reopen the area to Canadian patrols.

At least one antitank mine caused the explosion that killed Sgt. Robert Alan Short, 42, of Fredericton and Cpl. Robbie Christopher Beerenfenger, 29, of Ottawa on Oct. 2.

They died when their jeep hit the explosive device while on a routine patrol in Kabul. Three other soldiers were wounded.

Surviving a mine strike is very good news.

I hope it is a trend that continues!

RIP Sgt. Robert Short and Cpl. Beerenfenger
