041112-N-0000M-001 Atlantic Ocean (Nov. 12, 2004) – The decommissioned destroyer Hayler (DD 997) takes fire from a 57mm Bofors gun aboard the Canadian Halifax-class multi-role patrol frigate HMCS Ville De Quebec (F 332), during a Sink Exercise conducted 300 miles off the East Coast of the United States. Ville De Quebec is currently participating in NATO's Maritime Response Force commonly referred to as Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT). STANAVFORLANT is the world's first permanent peacetime multinational naval squadron. Hayler was the last Spruance-class of destroyers built by the Navy, and was decommissioned on Aug. 25, 2003. All decommissioned ships receive a thorough inspection by the EPA before sinking, and will now act as an artificial reef for deep-sea marine life. The sinking of these ships provides unique weapons training opportunities. Photo courtesy Canadian Navy by Master Cpl. John Mason (RELEASED

It said it was the last built, not the last to be decommissioned. But I think that most, if not all, have been replaced by the Arleigh Burkes.

Still... that's a bummer. They were good destroyers, but I guess that lack of anti-air capability is what killed them in this day and era.

The Arleigh Burke is a more than capable replacement in my opinion. I was aboard the USS Hue City during Fleet Week in New York City a few years back, and it was very impressive. Then again, most of what I got to see and learn about was superficial, but I'll stand by my expert opinion. ;)

Hue city isnt an Arleigh Burke DDG. Its a Ticonderoga-VLS (also called Bunker Hill) class CG.
THere are still quite a few Spruance Class destroyers in active service with the US navy. A number of them have been outfitted with VLS tubes and large numbers of tomahawks, making them ideal land attack ships, though their numbers will continue to dwindle as more Arleigh Burkes come into service.

If it is not to deep it will be a very interesting place for diving.

Not quite as dynamic as present day SINKEXs but interesting nonetheless. (Hi Res)
