Not really. Mostly it is personal preference. I am wearing a Blackhawk on the right. I usually do not care for most of their product line.

You wouldn't happen to be an AirSofter would you? Hatchetforce is a very large AirSoft team from SoCal. Pic kind of looks like 'Softers...faces don't look "hard" enough for Army SF. Many other aspects of the pic lack authenticity as well.

I'm going to assume he is until proven otherwise... but it might be worth knowing that all the SF types I ever met looked like your average 35-40 year old guy - almost like someone's dad. They weren't muscular looking, some even chubby, and some looked downright goofy. But they could all run your ass into the ground and smoke the **** out of anyone they met.

What I'm trying to say is that there's no way to tell if someone's SF just by looking at his physical image.

I would check too. The staff at ghostrecon.net paid a visit to me when I was assigned to 5th Special Forces Group at Campbell and received a guided tour. There are far too many posers these days and that is why I always check when I cross someone espousing claims. Fakes are usuallly easy enough to spot. And SWC has a database of all SF schools and the names of those that graduated and when.

 what? do you expect all SF guys look like Rambo? SF look like your average Joe on the street and some of them even look like a nerd. That doesn't mean they are any less hardcore because their appearance has nothing to do with how they fight.

Since that is a genuine pic and I was on the 3rd team to be inserted, just what aspects would that happen to be? And BTW, that is our 18C on the left and the Team Sgt in the middle

Here we are the morning after insertion getting on our "borrowed" taxi:

And you came straight off the street into SF? So the 18x program isn't new then?

I first joined up in '82. They used to call us SF Babies. There was no 18 series then. You received an 'S' identifier. I got out for a while in the early 90's but missed it so I came back in. Might as well get paid for diving and jumping.

I have a friend at Campbell, he goes by Richard or Monty. He's a 67t in delta of 101st. Said he hung out with some 5th SFG guys and got his book signed by one of the guys in it. "Hunt for BIn laden" or something to that affect.

Just two quick questions for you Hatchet- don't worry, none of them might put anyones' lives in danger:

How good a physical shape are you? I mean, can you run 1.5 miles in under 9? More than 15 pullups, etc, I just wanted to get an idea for the physical norms of people already in Special Forces, who've passed the tests.

And have you worked with any Canadian forces?

Thanks for your time, good luck.

Wow, that's hardcore. What foreign languages do you speak?

School trained in an Eastern European language, but my primary is self taught Spanish. Like most guys I picked up a smattering of a half dozen other languages. Just enough to get myself in trouble.

When did SF get it's own MOS?

I dpn't remember exactly when. After all it has been about 15 years. ;) We started getting rumours about the SF Tab and Branch in 84. A few rough versions came out and guys started wearing them without permission. 3rd Ranger Bn was formed and they came to Group and quite a few guys that didn't want to go were forced to head for Benning because they were Ranger qualified. After a few more years of that crap they finally came down and branched us.

I do have a rep as an idiot runner. I never run anything as short as 1.5 miles. We are still required to run the standard Army PT test. I can turn mid 10s in that. I haven't tried to max my pullups in a while as I usually do them in sets. The last time I did I hit about 25 or 26. That's what happens when you blow good down time out rock climbing.

Hey Hatchetforce,
Excellent pictures, and welcome to the forums! :)
I'm currently over in Kabul myself being a nuisence to to some...
Enjoying **** weather and worse drivers. In any case a very unique place, you don't often see men sitting down when taking a piss! p-) More pictures from this part of the world would definately be nice if you're up with sharing!

In any case, take care mate, wherever you end up working.

Cheers,

Welcome Hatchetforce....If you decide on the PMC angle drop me a line. We are needing people now and in two years time here in Kabul....good money and good operators. We have a few of your teammates from 5th, 7th, 3rd and 10th here. Stay safe.

In the jungle? Like where? And don't play mysterious because it sounds phony.

I spent most of my time (93-98)in the lower eastern quadrant of FARC-land. I also spent some time up in the Northeast on the Venezuelan border, but I don't think you SFers were up where we were. We always had four guys from the 7th attached with us, although they were doing their own thing as well (i'm sure you know). I did 9 trips to Colombia total over those years, so I got to see quite a few of the poeple out of the 7th detachment in Panama.

I also got to know a guy (after I got out) who was a full-bird in the 7th for a while. His name was Best. Very cool cat for a geezer. I think he spent most of his time at JTF-4 and just rotated down through the sites every once in a while. Anyway, that's history. You just looked like a guy who rotated down and spent a week playing cards with us. You can check out some of my not-so-great-pictures at http://www.washingtonpark.org/dru to see some places I was at.

Hope that wasn't too mysterious for ya',
tchau
