Anyone want to a guess why the Dutch navy needs a cruise missle?
Dutch Defence Minister Henk Kamp has promised to launch a review of the navy's force structure, following parliamentary opposition to the proposed retirement of the service's 10 P-3C Orions and its planned acquisition of Tactical Tomahawk cruise missiles.

well..let's just say that Henk Kamp ( the minister ) is a total retard...honestly...basically everything with a iq higher than 75 is opposed to the plan...but the guy just insists in ****ing up the military..
under his 'guidance' the military is about to:
-retire our orions (VERY bad move)
-buy totally USELESS tomahawks
-lose the SF monopoly on the green beret
-get the screwed up JSF (no offence, but our F16's will do for our needs for a long time to go)
-and i could go on and on...

I hear ya...and I feel your pain.
Is this part of the whole NATO should not rely on the United States bit? I have been hearing about it more and more (I am sure there are post dealing with this directly somewhere in the forum) ever since 1998. Is this your government's attempt to do this...
..their opinion, not yours. :)
Just curious, I tend to be a bit USA and Pacific Rim oriented when it comes to my research and reading.
Cheers!

well the germans are very keen to acquire your orions. tac tomahawk is a nice capability to have. JSF is a risky policy the FAA and RAF tac air wing here will be seriously screwed if the US cancel it. your updated F16's are good. There is alot of weird things happening across europe in defence why is the UK boosting its amphib capability yet cutting its surface escort fleet. are our govts preparing for the Euro Armed forces they want to build and will present s with a fete acompli?

nah, wudnt be, since the present (totally retarded) government is more the kind of 'kissing-the-mighty-USAss'-government :( hell, they supported the war in iraq even tho the majority of the ppl was against it...guess we should get to vote again anytime soon :P
now those tomahawks; really, theyre no use to use, since our army only fights in 3 kinds of occasions:
-Peacekeeping...tomahawks are as useless as nukes at this
-Defense of the homeland, where tomahawks are pretty useless, and besides, who's gonna attack us
-Attack...well, errm, u aint gonna see us invading belgium anytime soon, and the only attacks the netherlands would propably participate in would be under either UN or NATO flag, with lots of allies, of which quite some already have tomahawks...
so to make a long story short: this is one of the worst decisions one cud make :|
annoying fact: on one hand they wanna fire 10 000 ppl in the army, and close a military airport...while on the other hand they want the sexy (but totally useless) expensive toys like the tomahawks and the JSF....time to get back to the voting machines if u ask me :P

I think (as Dutchman) that Kamp is better than his fellow ministers and congres members. The most members of the Tweede Kamer (Dutch Congres) didn't want war in Iraq, Afghanistan and didn't agree with sending our Marines to Iraq.
But I never heard on the Dutch (Military) Forums, News sites etc. about this plan. These times our government have to economize 10 biljion dollar, and the Defense Forces have to economize 2 biljion.
I don't think that we are going to have Tomahawks.
Sorry for my bad English.

i see from one of the P3 sites the dutch are now looking at keeping the P3 for another year and looking at it becoming a GER/Neth force. I would say keep the P3's to your selves let the germans buy their own.
I would say the Dutch armed forces has come on leaps and bounds since the bad old days and that you are probably one of the best militaries in europe now.
just a pity we didn't buy into the de zeven provincien class destroyers they look really useful ships. Type 45 will probably be delayed and when it enters service will probably not work fully till they sort the soft ware out.

yeah im from holland, but got dual nationality, i have no f***** idea what we would do with tomahawks? We could probably only afford 5 or something lol, the hole military has just gone downhill the last 10 years.
I wanted to join the dutch airmobile but all the combat careers are 'full untill 2006' so thats why I'm joining the British army.
